Elements of his own experience are diffused in different characters – in particular the struggling, talented Edwin Reardon and the young, "modern" Jasper Milvain – through which he explores the sense of crisis for writers at the time: the gulf between aesthetic integrity and commercial success. It was the first major novel to place the concept of authorship at the heart of the plot, and allowed late-Victorian readers a tantalizing glimpse behind the scenes of literary production.

What a depressing story

I can’t believe l stuck with this story , it was very depressing and had no morally justified ending. I don’t think l will read any more George Gissing

compelling storytelling

might be too psychologically detailed for modern readers but I love the depth of the 19th century novel. George Gissing clearly understood well the literary world which he portrayed. the rich and variable tones of the narrator were completely perfect for the story.
