Summary

An epic collection of science fiction tales around space exploration and cosmic horror by the number one best-selling author of A Game of Thrones - with the titular story, 'Nightflyers', coming to Netflix in the summer of 2018.

On a voyage toward the boundaries of the known universe, nine misfit academics seek out first contact with a shadowy alien race.

But another enigma is the Nightflyer itself, a cybernetic wonder with an elusive captain no one has ever seen in the flesh. Soon, however, the crew discovers that their greatest mystery - and most dangerous threat - is an unexpected force wielding a thirst for blood and terror....

Also included are five additional classic George R. R. Martin tales of science fiction that explore the breadth of technology and the dark corners of the human mind.

Critic reviews

"I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers." (Robert Jordan)

"Of those who work in the grand epic-fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best. In fact...this is as good a time as any to proclaim him the American Tolkien." (Time)

"Long live George Martin...A literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers." (The New York Times)

Enjoyable

Enjoyable not-so-short stories that leave you wanting more. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and fantasy.

Poor writing

Sorry George, I've heard so many good things about your stories so thought I'd give this one a shot.
In all honesty I'm not too keen! The writing came across poorly and I didn't know what was going on half the time. The narrator is alright, did a good job, not his fault the writing was bad.
Poor choice of words in a lot of the chapters to describe things, I feel like the reader could be more immersed into the stories if the writing was better as a whole - you seemed as a reader to jump from one thing into the next without any warning at all even within the same paragraph.
Overall not too bad as background audio but if you want something to take you away mentally then this is not the book for you.

Deep and thought provoking stories

Brilliant narrator. Deep and mysterious voice.
The stories are written so that your imagination starts doing its work without any effort from your side. The images created are so vivid and colorful that I feel that I watched a film instead of listening to a book. As with all books by R.R.Martin, it feels like he’d really been there and is writing his memoirs.
The stories are set in unusual places and circumstances, are thought provoking and philosophical in the best sense.

Don’t bother

Don’t bother, stories predictable and rehashed versions of more original work. Martin trying to be clever but mostly fails. Waste of time.
