About this listen
Gripping historical mystery from the best-selling author of The Stranger Diaries.
Three girls have left. None has come back.
Brighton, 1963. Edgar Stephens has been promoted to Superintendent and is married to his former sergeant, Emma Holmes. Edgar's wartime partner in arms, magician Max Mephisto, is a movie star in Hollywood while his daughter Ruby has her own TV show.
The funeral of an old friend highlights just how much the gang's lives have changed in the last nine years. Edgar is struggling with fresh responsibilities and the new swinging Brighton of rioting mods and rockers; Emma is chafing against the restrictions of life as a housewife.
Bob Willis, meanwhile, is tackling his biggest case since his promotion to DI: a schoolgirl missing from high-class boarding school Roedean. It looks like she's run away; but there are disturbing similarities to the disappearances of a young local nurse and a tearaway Modette, neither of who has been seen or heard from since....
A new world is dawning in Brighton, but the city's dark side is as dangerous as ever.

Don't judge this book by the first few chapters
Worth sticking with. The characters have evolved dramatically since previous book, and it does take a while to adjust to. The storyline, seems a little slower than previous books in series and the humour is not so sharp. But, persevere, it is really worth it. Approach with an open mind, as we move from book 4 set in early 1950s to this book set in Early 60s and a rapidly changing world.

Liked catching up with old characters and seeing
How they had changed over the last ten years. Plot not bad either with its roots in actual events

EG continues to delight
Love all the E G books, hesitated starting this series but so glad I did. Characters to love and want to know what happens to them next mixed with a great detective story, what’s not to love 💕

What a difference a good narrator makes
Putting to one side the irritating plinky, plonking piano music at the start and end of the story, I really enjoyed this book.
It was an interesting idea to jump forward a decade in the lives of the main characters and mix things up a little by introducing some new ones.
I’m glad that Elly not only allowed Emma and Edgar to remain a couple, not without some tensions, but that Max married and had more children. I’m pleased that the few times I thought I knew what would happen next or who the culprit might be, I was wrong.
Overall it was an excellent story with a satisfying denouement and my appreciation was increased by the talented narrator. I shall look out for him in future. He really added to my listening pleasure. Many thanks Luke Thompson

Brilliant
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series I didn't think it would meet elly Griffiths other books but it did I loved the social story as well as the crime plenty of twists and Turns and I never once worked out the baddie the narrator and his sometimes voices come accent didn't quite make it but I could forgive that for the book

Great series...
There doesn’t seem to be a great deal to dislike about this series, although I was a tad unsettled by describing this book as an ‘Historical Novel’ when I was 21 in that year and wearing similar white, knee length boots and mini-skirt as one of the characters!
Superb narration and a ripping yarn with excellent characters - who could ask for more - but DO read the series in order.

Brighton mysteries
I enjoy the gentle romance in this one and the realistic kids. The mystery of disappearing girls is pretty good.

More Please
If you're an Elly fan you won't be disappointed by this 5th volume in the series. The series name change hasn't detracted from the excellent story telling. Elly has moved on the characters since the 4th book but keeps the reader wrapped up in the new plot and in the life of the characters.
More please!

Brilliant as always!!!!
Elly Griffiths Brighton mysteries are the best detective stories I have read for a long time!!!!
I love that they are set on the 1950's through to the 1960 's. The suspense, drama, characters and storylines all make this a thrilling read!!! I literally couldn't stop listening to it!!!! Luke Thompson is amazing, his superb voices and performance make each character completely distinguishable and come to life in your imagination. Loved it!!!!
