About this listen

'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.' He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.'

The 15th of July 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows?

Twenty years, two people, one day.

Critic reviews

"A wonderful, wonderful book: wise, funny, perceptive, compassionate and often unbearably sad. The best British social novel since Jonathan Coe's What a Carve Up!" ( The Times)

Gripping and heartbreaking, hilarious and tragic, this book shows the less sickly sweet side to love, following the two protagonists through their lives. By the time you have finished it, you will know and love both characters more deeply than your own relations and it will continue to haunt you long after it ends. Highly recommend.

Real and gripping

Don't become complacent - love fully.

Entertaining - not deep per se, but unexpected.

loved the simplicity, all the characters, no overplay of the issues of class. Obviously not happy about the ending but somehow couldn't see them growing old and ordinary.

How 'real' it was- no big drama or passion

This pissed me off very much that after a purchase I found out the recording is just 2 hours long which means it’s no the whole book! 🤬

Not the full book!
