About this listen

One Sunday morning, the outspoken speaker of the House of Commons steps out of his front door only to be crushed under a mountain of citrus fruit. Bizarre accident or something more sinister? The government needs to know because here's a man whose knowledge of parliament’s biggest secret could put the future of the government at stake.

It should be the perfect case for Bryant and May and the Peculiar Crimes Unit, but unfortunately one detective is in hospital, the other is missing and the staff have all been dismissed. It seems the PCU is no more. But events escalate: a series of brutal crimes seemingly linked to an old English folk-song threatens the very foundation of London society, and suddenly the PCU is offered a reprieve and is back in (temporary) business!

And if the two elderly detectives, ‘old men in a woke world’, do manage to set aside their differences and discover why some of London’s most influential figures are under life-threatening attack, they might not just save the unit but also prevent the entire city from descending into chaos....

Critic reviews

"The most consistently brilliant, entertaining and educational voice in contemporary British crime fiction." (Cathi Unsworth, author of That Old Black Magic)

Liked everything about the book and the narrator is the only one who could carry it off.

The twists and turns are brilliant

A joy to listen to, endearing characters and just plain wonderful! Old school charm and wit.

It was so good to hear Tim Goodman once again reading out Christopher Fowler's wonderful work. This story, similar to others in the series, has some wild criminal acts then proceeds to meander beautifully through the streets of London all pulled together by Arthur Bryant's (and probably Mr Fowler's) incredible love for our capital city.

This took a little while to get in to, but once a I had it was a brilliant read. I enjoyed the fast pace of this book, and in the end, Bryan and May do it again. Very enjoyable, and very well performed.

Perfect easy listening

This is a crime series which stands head and shoulders above the rest. The much-loved characters are a joy and the storylines are beyond brilliant. Tim Goodman’s narration is the best I’ve ever heard in well over 10 years of listening to audiobooks. Love this series with all my heart.

Genius

Oh dear: another brilliant B&M, with an extremely pleasing twist at the end… but we know that there’s only one more to go, after the sad loss of Christopher Fowler. I have loved this series and its characters. What a pleasure it’s been to accompany them. I’m looking forward to one last outing with them, though I fear it will be immeasurably sad finally to part from them. And you couldn’t have had a more appropriate narrator than Tim Goodman, who must definitively be the voice of Bryant & May, particularly of Arthur Bryant.

The end approaches…

I have long been aware of the origins of the nursery rhyme and almost considered it an old A-Z of London but this was quite unexpected and I never saw the end coming !!

Unusual detective story!

Loved it. Great story. Outstanding narration. Nice twist. Probably my favorite in the series so far.

another great story

These stories are excellent and I love the historical nuggets running through them. Just one thing is increasingly annoying me and thats the narrator’s very odd pronunciation of some very common words. Competency is a case in point which he repeatedly pronounces as if spelt cumpetency but there are many others as well as the increasingly slurred speech making May in particular sound permanently inebriated.

Love these books but some of the pronunciation is really beginning to annoy me

This is by far the best novel is this series although I've really enjoyed every book in the series. This writer is great and I wish that every author I've read could entertain us with humour, intrique, history and mystery whilst striking a chord with most people's lived experience.

Love these stories
