About this listen

The Earl of Burford can't believe his luck. Rex Ransom, his favourite star from the 'talkies', and his hot-shot producer, Haggermeir, want to film their next feature at Alderley, the family's seventeenth-century country estate.

Somewhat less enthusiastic is the Countess, who finds herself hosting an impromptu house party for the incoming Hollywood crowd. And before long the guest list grows to include two of their wilful daughter Lady Geraldine's dubious suitors, a long-lost cousin, a sultry femme fatale, a bespectacled librarian, an eccentric screenwriter, and a professional blackmailer.

It's almost too much for Merryweather, the family's imperturbable butler, to cope with. And that's before there's a murder in the dead of night. Inspector Wilkins must unravel the baffling mystery - and work out just what a mutilated mink coat has to do with anything.

Loved it. The narrator was brilliant and expressive. Shame it had to end. Great story.

Good twist.

Outstandingly narrated. The plot is a bit far fetched and similar to the previous book, but enjoyable all the same.

Very well read

Listened to and read out of sequence, this was, never the less, a thoroughly enjoyable winter teaser. Cornelius Garret again proves his command of audiobook performance. The skilful choice of characters to populate this mystery is well judged. They instantly tell you this is more of a romp than a Christie imitation. Part of the joy of this one is the addition of an additional sleuth. there is little more to add than to say Audible listeners can trust to selecting this title.

But not as much as the Blood stained egg cosy! Amusing tale nevertheless, with twists and turns.

Enjoyed the twists

It’s hard for a seasoned whodunnit reader to be surprised after a life of Agatha Christie novels and any others I can lay my hands on. But this one still had surprises for me, not necessarily the whodunit itself but the intricacies of the plot and the joyous characterisation. Wish there was more of these books.

So well read, very pleasing

I'm thinking of forming a Cornelius Garrett fanclub. His narrations of various Georgette Heyer stories are hilarious and masterly, and I think he may actually be even better with the works of James Anderson.

The books are well-written, entertaining whodunnits, with an engagingly humble detective, Inspector (now Chief Inspector) Wilkins.

Cornelius Garrett's narration is what elevates them to greatness. Brilliant characterisation, often laugh out loud funny.

I do wish there were more of these!

Entertaining whodunit elevated by superb narration
