 Three-year-old Lexie, five-year-old Amelie and thirteen-year-old Leo come to Maggie after Leo confesses to a teacher that his mother's addiction problems and her latest violent relationship has left him as the sole carer to his younger sisters.

Maggie welcomes the three children into her home, and is touched by the gentle care Leo shows to the two little girls. It is clear that Lexie and Amelie adore their big brother, and rely on him for comfort and reassurance. But Leo has experienced the neglect and abuse of his mother and her partner for far longer than his sisters, and is struggling with an eating disorder and showing signs of OCD.

When Social Services begin to look at adoptive families for the children, Maggie is horrified when Social Services suggest that the two angelic little girls will have a much better chance of being adopted without their damaged older brother. a very emotional story and not really the happy ending we hope for. on this occasion social services actually caused severe mental trauma to a child and I find that shocking. I don't blame Maggie for not wanting to be part of split adoptions again.

I really loved this book and bought it on Audible, Just heart breaking that such a young boy cared for his sisters so well and the outcome of the children brought tears to my eyes. Another excellent book from Cathy Glass

I don’t think I’m giving anything away here given the title of the book but I really felt for Leo. The loss he must of felt following the separation from his sisters likely felt similar to a death but only Maggie was hearing his pain.
I don’t want to spoil anything here so I’ll simply say it’s worth a read but prepare to be annoyed, surprised and upset.

I am a foster carer and feel that this book was very accurately written, it was a sad story but was easy to follow and the characters fitted well. I really enjoyed this audiobook

Well written and well read as always, but Leo's story is truly heartbreaking. I hope that he, Lexie and Amelie are able to move on from their past and find peace and happiness.

Utterly heartbreaking!

This has got to be one of the hardest books i have ever listened too as the heartbreak is so overwhelming.
Maggie and many other foster carers go through this heartbreak and I honestly don’t know how they stay so strong! I haven’t been able to keep a dry eye for the last 2 hours. This is the brutal truth of what goes on and not every decision is the right one. Maggie please know i am sending you all the hugs i could ever give and all my love!

A very sad story about 3 lovely children whose alcoholic mother is completely incapable of caring for or about them. Maggie is very experienced and good with troubled teens, as well as highly trained, yet she is really shocked and traumatised by seeing the 13 year old Leo self harming. (I had already suspected it from several clues but she didn't seem to pick up on anything). She also seems pretty slow to pick up on his eating disorder, despite multiple obvious clues I deduced the truth from straight away. (very thin, not eating, refused to be weighed or expose his body etc). Although this could be a storytelling technique to keep the suspense flowing!
The two girls have been entirely cared for by Leo all their lives and are relatively unaffected, so will be easy to adopt. But Leo is a different matter. Yet they need to stay together.
