Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable, audiobook edition of Prayer for the Dead, from the best-selling Inspector McLean series by Sunday Times best-selling author James Oswald, read by Ian Hanmore.

Are you ready to be reborn? The search for a missing journalist is called off as a body is found at the scene of a carefully staged murder. In a sealed chamber, deep in the heart of Gilmerton Cove, a mysterious network of caves and passages sprawling beneath Edinburgh, the victim has undergone a macabre ritual of purification.

Inspector Tony McLean knew the dead man, and can't shake off the suspicion that there is far more to this case than meets the eye. The baffling lack of forensics at the crime scene seems impossible. But it is not the only thing about this case that McLean will find beyond belief.

Teamed with the most unlikely and unwelcome of allies, he must track down a killer driven by the darkest compulsions, who will answer only to a higher power...

Are you ready for the mysteries to be revealed?

Another serial killer off the streets!

Another brilliant novel involving DI McLean and even though I guessed the protagonist two thirds through the book there was still some twists and turns along the way and some real "he's behind you" moments.

I love this author and this series and I am really looking forward to Book 6 as the novels just get better and better.

A special word also for the narrator Ian Hanmore who brings these books to life. Great diction and no annoying and uneccessary affectations!

Whispering

I have really enjoyed the James Oswald series so far, but the whispering in this book was really annoying. An audible book is called an AUDIBLE book for a reason, you are supposed to be able to hear it!!! Much weaker story line than the others in the series so far. Let’s hope that the rest of the series doesn’t include the ridiculous whispering.

Another fantastic book for Inspector McLean

Would you listen to Prayer for the Dead again? Why?

yes but I would listen to the other books in order .

What was one of the most memorable moments of Prayer for the Dead?

the end was a surprise and kept you gripped until the end.

Which character – as performed by Ian Hanmore – was your favourite?

Inspector Mclean

Any additional comments?

I would say that it would be good to listen to the books in order as some of the themes run through .
excellent listen.

loved the whole series so far.

loved it, loved it, loved it. Narrator is great and brilliant plot. Every book has been great, and this is no exception, keeps you guessing with just a touch of the super natural without becoming ridiculous.

Another great book in the series

Another excellent book in the series excellently narrated as usual!

I do think they need to be read in order as there are lots of references to previous stories and McLean's background.

Hope there are more and read by Ian Hanmore- he is up there in my top 2 of narrators with Sean Barrett!

I had to keep reading

I've enjoyed all the books in this series but I liked Dead Men's Bones and this book better than the early books because McLean seemed stronger and his relationships with senior officers were more balance and believable.

I couldn't put this one down, it kept me interested right to the end. I found the whispered parts of the narration creepy and chilling, the narrator is excellent but perhaps I would have preferred a bit less of that voice in the book. The ending was the weakest part of the book, there was lots to think about and I wanted more answers.

I will definitely get the next book!

The mystery deepens

Really enjoying this series of books. The story of the lead character Tony McClean, as with every story we see his world unravel, and that of others, around him

Not as gripping

Story lacked something. I can't put my finger on what but it wasn't as gripping as his previous 3. Also the chapters that were whispered rather than spoken drove me up the wall. Literally too quiet to be heard unless the volume was turned up. Hopeless when you're listening to get off to sleep as it meant fiddling with the volume then turning it back down. Not very restful! Ian Hanmore did an excellent job with the narration as always - a shame about the whispering chapters!
