Summary

Separated from her ship, Major Trace Thakur is stranded on the reeh-occupied world of Rando. The native corbi have suffered beneath reeh tyranny for 800 years, and many have given up hope. But Trace needs the data stored in the reeh’s genetic technology and command center - the Rando Splicer - if she’s to learn how to save humanity from impending disaster, and is planning an assault against overwhelming odds. She’ll need help from the UFS Phoenix, though, which is caught in a ritual medieval battle to change the croma leadership that sees her crew embarking on a perilous journey across a warring desert continent. Should they fail, humanity could be just one of many species to die.

Simply superb

This galaxy with its participants are both fascinating and a great story. The balance of pace, storyline and character is perfect.

good

way better than po-faced US military sci-fi

doesn't feel like a story happening on a ship that has been transposed into a space-ship

Best one yet!

Spiral Wars was my first audible series I got into and I thought it was great. After Rando Splicer, and I have listened to other Sci-fi Military books, I realise it is excellent. The best in the genre to my knowledge! The plot of this one is a little unusual in the series; 2 separate storylines one of which is a road trip. But they both play off each other so well and keep the action going. Shepherd has a real knack for character and world building and John Lee is a great narrator. Get the rest of the series then this one! Cant wait for the next one.

Gritty Space Opera!

Joel Shepperd manages to bring the World to life. Combined with John Lee's excellent narration you can hear the action and even smell the smoke of battle!

Good but convoluted and messy

I have enjoyed the spiral wars series, however with every book they get more convoluted and 'baggy'. This one is hard to follow as there are lots of different aliens and not enough time concentrated on the main characters (in my opinion). Some of the battle scenes are over indulged and go on for so long that I lost interest and just wanted the story to progress. I found the end somewhat unsatisfying, not quite a cliffhanger but not nicely rounded up either. Not sure if I will bother with the next one, would like to see what happens but having to wade through so much chaff can get tiresome.

Bit of a drag

I love the series and will get the next. If you are like me, you will listen to this one, perhaps not at x2 as I did and towards the end skipping through the story. It just didn’t grab me, I hope you enjoy it more.

An unnecessary entry

The UFS Phoenix is now so far off course from their self appointed mission even the characters are starting to question what they're trying to achieve.

This is book 6 and we're now onto our second alien leadership contest. A new round of factions, leaders, characters of dubious loyalty and various alien ways of deciding who gets to be in charge.

The entire contents of this could have been covered in a single chapter or even a few paragraphs, everything else is filler to pad out a full novel. Nothing changes for humanity and little is learned about the AI threat.
