About this listen

The Guild of Arcane Regulation has fractured, and new forces move on the board. Callum cannot quite declare victory, for even a weakened GAR still forces him to hide from the world at large, yet he is no longer prepared to run. Instead, he builds his own strengths to stand against those who wish to do him harm.

Change, once started, is hard to stop. Callum’s actions have brought change to the world of the supernatural, but that can bring chaos and destruction even as he eliminates tyranny and corruption. He has to move beyond being one man against the world and stand in the world he’s made.

I felt the storey had just progressed along a natural path where yes the action scenes have slowed down and the background time passes much more readily but this work with the premises Calum has grown as a person and his problems have gone from Individual groups to more organised opponents with his research to keep his promises I think the author did a good job juggling everything together looking forward to the next installment of the series

this is a book that looks alot more into other characters' perspectives but Its also full of the typical love interest causing issues Lucy while trying to be a nice person always tells calum not to do something or to not kill someone which then leads to that in action causing problems that she then moans about also her morals flip flop wildly depending on whether or not it effects her, its not unbearable but it is a bit jarring to have the moral compass spinning wildly and not making sense

more perspectives and Lucy's mistakes

A lot of the same only that muppets and politics takes the whole book. MCs and the story is getting boring. No character or magical development at all. Won’t get next book.

Boring. Dropped!

This was a bit of a disappointment after the past few books. We've moved away from quick action and chases to long, drawn out political meetings where potential actions are debated back and forth. I can think of maybe 2 or 3 exciting bits and they were all over in minutes.

The pacing is slow too. Book 1 is about him discovering he's a mage, fleeing, hiding, etc. Book 4 covers Callum sitting at home gardening for most of it and his kid goes from unconceived to about 3 years old over the course of the story.

Other than nothing ever really happening, the story isn't bad but I was bored enough that I don't think I'll read book 5. The narration was good but Lucy's voice is still very grating. I'd stick to the first 3 books as a great trilogy.

Lots of politics
