About this listen

In defiance of NASA, Jane Holloway, the linguist of the Providence expedition, commandeers the alien ship that crew explored. She sets off to return that ship's marooned navigator to his home world, determined to discover who was behind the genocide that destroyed his original crew.

But when she gets there, she finds his world devastated by the same plague. The remaining members of his race, uniquely gifted at navigating the stars, are stranded across the galaxy. And someone, it seems, doesn't want those lost navigators to be found.

As Jane unravels the mystery of the plague and works to ensure the survival of Ei'Brai's race, she discovers that the life of every sentient being in the galaxy may be in jeopardy, and the clock is ticking.

If you could sum up Remanence in three words, what would they be?

buy in print

What other book might you compare Remanence to, and why?

the Shan Frankland novels crossed with farscape perhaps

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator changed half way through from a female narrator with a talent for accents and an extremely relaxing voice to a man who's accents all for some reason sound like a bad impression of someone from Bangladesh

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I couldn't go on following the change in narrator

Change in narrator ruins an otherwise great story

I loved Fluency. It was full of new things to experience and told a great fresh story. This book left me with mixed feelings.

The basic story is still a good one, but nowhere near as interesting as the first one. Pace is waay slower (apart for the ending). New characters introduced are a mixed bunch. Some great and interesting. Some just annoying (indeed, indeed, indeed...).

The "sex chapters" I could do without. They read like bad adolescent bodice rippers.

Narrators are doing a good job and Susanna Burney still enunciates like no narrator I've ever listened to.

I feel that I will not buy the next book in the series. Too bad really, since the core story is good. It feels like the author have created a story bigger than her writing talent can handle. Too bad. I really wanted to like this.

Tells a good story in a bad way.
