About this listen

The handsome and charismatic earl of Stratton, Caleb Ware, has been exposed to the ton for his clandestine affairs—by his own son.

As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenwood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at 22, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor.

So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn't look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home. It's only when Gwyneth Rhys—the woman he loved and then lost after his family banished him—holds out her hand to help him that he is able make the difficult journey and try to piece together his fractured family.

It is Gwyneth's loyalty, patience, and love that he needs. But is Devlin's war-hardened heart even capable of offering her love in return?

great introduction to families and area

minus 1 star because as usual bzlogh repeats what happened, what feelings are felt, as if instructed to pad out book. audio is best. balogh is one of the better novelists though.

Great story line but …

I am a great fan of Mary Balogh BUT THIS BOOK TOOK 3.5 hours to get into the story

The first few hours it is soooo much detail that one wonders to stop or to continue!
It took 3.5 hours of what I considered wasted time, too many details before the story starts to grip you -
Then you are lured into the story and it starts to be repetitive again and again …

I personally was disappointed by this book - even so the idea of the story plot is very charming- but badly executed- sorry to say

Let’s see what book II in this series will be like - after all - it deserves a chance!

Excellent book well written by a talented Author.
The narrator is also excellent. And her performance holds your attention.

lovely story narrated beautifully !

Rosemary Landore's voice narrating a lovely story so well, and in such a sympathic, enhancing manner - what a joy to listen to is delightful.

Love eventually celebrated

it's a long journey but the love that is shared at the end is worth it all. Mary Balogh at her best!

The depth of character

A slowly unfolding tale of courage and heartache and the true meaning of love. My only criticism would be the extremely slow start which didn’t add to the story and then the key middle part as the two main characters grew up as it were, is glossed right over. Also the end is heartfelt but felt almost too easy. But all in all well worth listening to.

Not very strong story

I found the story didn't hold my interest at all. There is also too much dialogue between the characters and it doesn't move along quickly enough. I have read and enjoyed many Mary Balogh books in the past.

Not the best Balogh book

I have read ALL Mary's novels and loved most of them so it's sad that I could not love this one. The writing is of course better than many others in this genre but I found the characters uninteresting. Indeed Devin came out quite boring and I did not warm to Gwyneth.

The incident which changed everything didn't happen until chapter 9 - so much description beforehand and much padding and repetition: the words 'just one day' said many times The scene with Devlin and the publican and his wife who combine to organise the village assembly is done in much detail- we know who will cook, who will pay, organise etc. A few pages later,Devlin explains exactly the same long details to Gwyneth. The point was for her to tell him how caring he was in relation to his father. We did not need all the details the second time round - a sentence might have sufficed.

I am on chapter 22 and will plough on because I have much admiration for Mary Balogh and hope the novel engages my interest more. If you loved this book, please remember it is my own opinion and that there are different strokes for different folks.

Having finished he book I have not changed my opinion -- listen to other Balogh novels rather than this one.

So much detail 🤦‍♀️

I usually enjoy Balogh’s books but the unnecessary detail in this book, made it impossible to stick with it. Such a shame, but I had to give up. So sorry to leave a poor review, but life is just too short.
