About this listen

Don’t miss the first novel in a gripping series featuring DI Clare Mackay, perfect for fans of Alex Gray, D. S. Butler and Rachel Amphlett.

On the night of a wedding celebration, one guest meets a grisly end when he’s killed in a hit-and-run. A card bearing the number ‘five’ has been placed on the victim’s chest. DI Clare Mackay, who recently moved to join the St Andrews force, leads the investigation.

The following night another victim is struck down and a number ‘four’ card is at the scene. Clare and her team realise they’re against the clock to find a killer stalking the streets and bent on carrying out three more murders.

To prevent further deaths, the police have to uncover the link between the victims. But those involved have a lot more at stake than meets the eye. If Clare wants to solve the case, she must face her own past and discover the deepest secrets of the victims - and the killer.

“Marion Todd’s welcome addition to the genre feels like a breath of fresh, tartan noir air.” (Scottish Field)

I’ve actually just finished book 4 in this series and am so glad I ignored comments about poor narration! It took me 5 minutes to get used to the author’s/reader’s voice and I found her excellent; very natural and with enough subtle distinction between the voices that I knew who was speaking. I loved these books! This first is a scene-setter but also a really good story in is own right. I didn’t expect to enjoy them so much, but got hooked and grew to care about the characters, who are so excellently written. Book one is fab, but I found each story better than the last, which shows the growth of the author, whose work I will definitely be following. I hope there will be more books in this series.

Ignore negative comments about narration!

The story was ok, was not gripping, however was not dull. Some of the comments had mentioned the bad narration. Sounded like she had a cold and voice was flat. As much as you wanted to know the outcome, couldn't wait for it to end

Narrator was dreadful

loved the story line and the various twists which kept me guessing easy to listen to narration - also good to recognise many of places mentioned!

gripping

This is a new author to me. I was dubious at the author also being the narrator. I shouldn't have been concerned as it was an excellent performance. The content of the story was gripping, the characters well crafted and the conclusion satisfying. Now looking for the follow up. Recommended

New Scottish Noir

Nice pace detective story read in the accent of the book basis by the author.

...but authors narrating their own books is never good. Lack of sound engineering meant it sounded like she'd recorded it in the bathroom. Also very lifeless delivery. Story was engaging enough.

It was okay...

A great story that will have you guessing and doesn't reveal it's true essence until and then hits you like a bomb. The lead character's life keeps you occupied as a separate story, adding to the intrigue of this book.

Addictive and harrowing story.

Well constructed story. Refreshing heroine. Excellent, no nonsense reader with no annoying need to show off.

A very happy surprise.

I've started being a bit more circumspect about doling out 5 star reviews & will keep those for the truly exceptional. This was excellent, but not exceptional!
Cracking story, good twists & turns and nice bits of sub-plot running through it. Nice to hear an author narrating - the delivery might not have the absolute perfection of an actor/professional narrator, but the fact that she knew exactly how she wanted her characters portrayed gave the whole thing a warmth, life & intimacy that added to the listening experience. I'll look out for more in this series & hope that the next few are a bit longer - finished this one in a day, so not outstandingly good value, pound for hour.

Excellent listen!

Agree with other reviews wouldn’t of listened if I knew it contained child abuse. I don’t understand why there aren’t triggers warnings, or disclaimers.

Wouldn’t recommend
