Summary
When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses - and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he's offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger.
Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke's castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul. But the Duke's steely determination to protect his heart at all costs is challenged by his growing attachment to his lovely and gentle bride. With caring persistence, Persephone attempts to pierce the Duke's armor and reach the man beneath. Yet, he cannot tolerate such exposure, and his repeated rejections take their toll. But when grave danger arises, the Duke realizes he must face the risk of revealing his true feelings or lose the woman he cannot live without.

Such a sweet story
It is always so refreshing to read a new author who can write a clean and charming story and this is rather like beauty and the beast.
If you are looking for a light read and one that will pull at your heart strings, look no further.
Adam, Duke of Kielder, lives in his remote castle in Northumberland. He has a foul temper, is feared by many and has indeed only one friend, Harry. There is a tragic story behind why he is such a lonesome character and why he won't have any visitors to his castle, which is quite understandable.
The crux comes when his estate upon his death will pass a long lost cousin who he doesn't like and decides to find a wife to thwart any attempts by the cousin to succeed to the dukedom.
Enter Persephone who is a delightful character. She is a charming and sweet natured girl who has had to, due to circumstances, run the house, look after her siblings and has never really had a childhood of her own.
Due to the family estate creaking financially, it is seen as a blessing when the Duke offers for her hand with a huge payoff and she goes willingly like a lamb to the slaughter.
It is lovely to watch how this bad tempered and irascible Duke is slowly brought to heel by the charms Persephone.
I thought the writer brought the book to an excellent end by bring all the loose threads together and it was a delightful rendition of the retelling of Hades and Persephone.
The only downside is the insipid narration.

Very Clean enjoyable, light read; good narration
This sweet little story is based on the Hades and Persephone myth, but it has some beauty and the beast vibes. The characterization was very well done and believable and the FMC is gentle and intelligent and selfless. The MMC has a perfectly believable back story and a nice arc that shows his softening. The plot has a couple weak points that I found disappointing, and the narrator speaks too quickly for my taste, but there were so many good things about this story, I will listen to it again and again going forward. Definitely worth your time if you enjoy fairytale/myth retellings.
