Summary
President Barack Obama’s summer reading choice
What would happen if the world were ending?
When a catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb, it triggers a feverish race against the inevitable. An ambitious plan is devised to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere. But unforeseen dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain…
Five thousand years later, their progeny – seven distinct races now three billion strong – embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown, to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.
A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is at once extraordinary and eerily recognizable. He explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.
Critic reviews
"He makes reading so much fun it feels like a deadly sin." ( The New York Times)
"Fast-forward free-style mall mythology for the 21st century." (William Gibson)
"[Stephenson is] the hacker Hemingway." ( Newsweek)

Half a book
This book has no ending. It changes direction wildly half way through and then fails to deliver a full story in the new setting.

too long and detailed.
this is more like two stories, one of which is unfinished. I loved parts of it and the ideas are great, but too much time is spent exposing in detail how things work. enjoyed it but would have enjoyed it more if it had been ten hours shorter. and if it hadn't felt like it just tailed off at the end.

A true epic
The narrator did an admirable job of representing so many characters in this epic. I use the word with care, as nowadays any story that spans more than one volume is given the label. This story has a definite arc from end to end and is jam-packed with Stephenson's usual cocktail of technology, dramatic locations and characters of varied ages and experience. A good/listen, but make sure you can commit the time! :) It left me yearning for another volume.

Great long listen
Interesting book not only on the sci-fi aspect but also it is more of an analysis of human nature, how it changes and adapts to different circumstances. Downside on the third part sometimes the author goes into great detail on parts that are less important and skims the interesting things. still worth a listen!

Dark and believable sci-fi; good narrator
Really liked the story, although there were too many technical detail about orbital dynamics for my taste.

Yet another stunning, stunning book!!
Immense, surreal, beautiful, scientifically and technologically believable and accurate.
A masterpiece. I appreciate that this write up doesn’t explain at all what the book is about, that’s intentional. Read/listen to find out.

Believed this could be possible
If you could sum up Seveneves in three words, what would they be?
Its a very detailled, believable, possibility
What does Peter Brooke bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I like his voice but not sure about some of the accents which were a bit distracting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Couldn't put it down and if I could have listened to it in one sitting I would have. 32 and a half hours seemed like a long time when I started but got so wrapped up in the story, was actually surprised when it finished.
Any additional comments?
Really hope that there is a follow up or parallel stories published as it all ended a bit abruptly and I need to know what happened.

Cost effective but kinda average
Inpressive in its scale, and for its adherance to physics but just a bit bland compared to Stephenson's other books.
Totally subjective but I found the contrivances of the plot highly unbelievable. The Earth exploding, fine. Some of the swings in the plot, and character motivations, immersion ruining.
Also the writing and narration style were kinda bland and monotone.
On the upside, you get a lot of book for one credit...

Brilliant. I wanted more even at the end.
I couldn't imagine reading the book and getting the same amount of enjoyment that was provided by Peter Brooke. Neal Stephenson's story was an epic tale stemming from a simple idea of the moon breaking up. Would anyone survive? Along the way I learnt about celestial mechanics, survival in space, genetics and the struggle for survival of the human race. Or should I say races? A joy to experience from beginning to end.
