About this listen

Shattergirl, Earth's first lesbian guardian - a brilliant but aloof alien superheroine who can hurl and destroy large objects - is refusing to save people and has gone off the grid. Lena Martin, the street-smart tracker with a silver tongue and a disdain for the rogue guardians she chases, has only days to bring her home. As the pair clash heatedly, masks begin to crack and brutal secrets are exposed that could shatter them both.

This was fine. My rating may have something to do with me being jaded about the superhero genre.

Some of this felt like polemic. It had a point, but it felt blunt, and that the story was window dressing. It was difficult to empathise with the main characters as presented.

I have nothing against Abby Craden in particular, but I feel that she is the narrator of such a large proportion of content within my genre's of interest that I might be becoming oversaturated with her creamy, breathy, deliberate delivery.

Uninspiring

I love this one! The characters are really personable and the storyline is well thought out.
Abby, the narrator, reads really well. I thoroughly enjoy listening to her voice.

Wonderful!

Pretty good adventure/romance with a twist ! The ending may not be all that satisfying to some but it's from the plus catalogue and therefore free!

Pretty Good.......

Not what I expected, but a brilliant and thought provoking story with wonderful narration. I loved the clever dialogue which resulted in the characters finding their common ground and understanding. Will re listen this one for sure.

Interesting and enjoyable

I don't usually enjoy fantasy but this has a great plot and characters. It's really well written too.
The one slight drawback is Abby Craden's narration. TBF, she's not as OTT as usual as this, and sounds less affected when the narration speed is increased. However, she still can't do order women and the voice she gives Mrs Finkelstein makes her sound frail and as though she'll pop off at any moment, instead of sounding like the tough order woman she's supposed to be. That said though, I found this a surprisingly enjoyable listen.

Don't usually enjoy fantasy but this is great

Great

As with so many fantasy books, there is a considerable amount of subtext to this story. As usual, Winter has done an excellent of going beyond giving a story with great characters.

Most of the book is just the author blaming white men for everything wrong with the world. So basically your typical lesbian story.

Author venting her sexism

...we get it. No need to hammer it in. Shattergirl is an interesting MC, intelligent and nuanced, with moral dilemmas and agency. The human protagonist is... off putting. She has a major chip on her shoulder and is either insecure or angry. Or both. She also completely lacks the insight to see that she is just as whiny as the superheroes she accuses of being whiny. Sadly, the story is told through her, so I did what I rarely do: quit. With 2 hours left to go I just don't care what happens. If the story had been told through Shattergirls perspective it probably would have kept my interest. The bones of the story itself are good.

The narrator did an excellent job here, different tones clearly separating characters.

Yes, people are evil...
