Summary
When DI Vera Stanhope finds the body of a woman in the sauna room of her local gym, she wonders briefly if, for once in her life, she’s uncovered a simple death from natural causes. Then Vera spots ligature marks around the victim’s throat....
Vera revels being back in charge of an investigation again, working with Sergeant Joe Ashworth to find a motive. While Joe struggles to reconcile his home life with the demands of the case, death has never made Vera feel so alive. The duo investigates the victim’s past and discovers a shocking case, involving a young child. Probing the secretive community, they try to stop a killer in the present who can’t seem to let go of the past.

Sounds like a robot
I don’t know if it was the wifi. the narrator was great, but sometimes she sounded like a robot - a bit like a dalek with a 3d kind of sound

Lots of complex characters and themes
The story is well read and full of complicated characters. It gives you a great feel for the geography of the area in which it is set.
I was still somewhat confused when Vera summed everything up at the end! I was grateful for this series of explanations tho. The author does seem to like complicating things!

excellent book by Ann Cleeves
the narrator must be the most irritating ever born. it's an insult how she gives female characters, apart from Vera Stanhope, ridiculous squeaky kiddies' voices. all the female characters sound the same and it spoils the story. they sound totally brainless. she doesn't give the men silly boys voices. get someone else to narrate, please!!

Anne Cleeves a storyteller who is believably.
This was a story that had you hooked from the start.
The narrator did an excellent job in the various characters and brought it to life.
I did read the story but the audible version did it well.

Had me hooked
First Ann Cleeves book I have listened to. I enjoyed the TV series so thought I would give this a try. The story was captivating and I intended to only listen to it when I was traveling but instead listened at every available opportunity. Will look forward to my next Ann Cleeves book.

Great story; hideous narration
Urgh, the narrator! Every woman except Vera gets this ridiculous, squeaky little voice... and don't get me started on her butchering of a Northern Irish accent. The story is great but the narrator distracts.

A classic Vera
Such an engaging listen, like all Vera books. Good plot twists with a very helpful summary at the end.
