I have been fond of Susan Cooper’s books for a long time. I just had fun listening to the dark is rising but when I heard the Silver on the tree I could not under the crass stupidity in having a narrator whose grasp of Welsh was simply appalling. I don’t know if he realised that Wales is a country of many dialects, both English and Welsh. The narrator of the Grey King was brilliant and understood to the subtlety of colloquial welsh. I think you need to re-,record the book as soon as possible.

Very bad use Welsh

The sound quality on this recording is not good at all, and it sounds tinny and rough compared to the rest of the series. Add to that, the Welsh accents and pronunciations are shocking. Given that the book before has several sections where the character of Bran explains to Will how to pronounce all of these words and locations, you'd figure the production team could have grabbed the information they needed pretty easily.

Love this series, and the 4th book was read by someone who was excellent at pronouncing all the Welsh. This reader wasn't at all good. This made for a disappointing and annoying listen as a Welsh speaker, particularly as the correct pronunciation is carefully explained by one of the characters to another during the 4th book !

This is an absolutely wonderful rendition of the sequence of novels. Exciting, moving and gripping. I have enjoyed every minute.

Alex Jennings is a great actor, but he really shouldn’t have read this book. His Welsh accent and pronunciation are dreadful. “Dyfi” as “diffy”, for example. Was there nobody to advise him?
There was a different narrator for The Grey King, whose accents and pronunciation were perfect. He should have done this one too.
Jennings’ voicing of the English characters was good, and the story is good, but the Welsh ones were terrible, and very off-putting.

I love all these books and this is almost an excellent rendition...it's such a shame that the little research it would have taken to get the Welsh pronunciation correct was not done. The, otherwise, engaging performance is however marred by the garbled approximation of the Welsh.

rereading (listening to) this volume makes me remember how much ground the series covers. much folklore and myth is brought into this series of linked books.
