Summary
From New York Times best-selling author Angie Fox, the first book in the new Southern Ghost Hunter mysteries.
One simple mistake, for a girl who is about to lose her family home, releases the ghost of a long-dead gangster and opens Verity Long's eyes to a whole new world.
When out-of-work graphic designer Verity Long accidentally traps a ghost on her property, she's saddled with more than a supernatural sidekick - she gains the ability to see spirits. It leads to an offer she can't refuse from the town's bad boy, the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with. Ellis Wyatt is in possession of a stunning historic property haunted by some of Sugarland, Tennessee's finest former citizens. Only some of them are growing restless - and destructive. He hires Verity to put an end to the disturbances.
But soon Verity learns there's more to the mysterious estate than floating specters, secret passageways, and hidden rooms. There's a modern-day mystery afoot, one that hinges on a decades-old murder. Verity isn't above questioning the living or the dead. But can she discover the truth before the killer finds her?

Very entertaining
If you could sum up Southern Spirits in three words, what would they be?
A fun mystery
Any additional comments?
I painted a very long fence while listening to this story. I painted the fence in half the time

Surprisingly enjoyable!!
Was looking for some easy listening... This was perfect!! Fun, cheery & well written... and, a big plus for me, it wasn't romance-driven and the heroine wasn't an insultingly ditsy girl! Would recommend it, if you're in the mood for some lighthearted mystery (ghosts, yes, but essentially real-world)!! Give it a try!!

A different kind of ghost story!
Well written with good characterisation and an unusual plot. Beatiful narration with a wide variety of voices so it is easy to differentiate between the characters. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the series.

Fun to read .
Witty, different with a good story. I thoroughly enjoyed this audible book. It did make me chuckle out loud, embarrassing when you are taking the dog for a walk with your earphones in.

A tonic
A tonic if you are feeling low or the most hilarious ghost/crime story. Made perfect by the narrator.

Great and delightfully unusual
I should explain that I came across book 1.5 first and then moved on to book two but in the end couldn't resist going back and taking a peek at this book which is book one in the series. I'm so glad I did, as it is every bit as great as the others and listening to them in the wrong order did not detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. Sometimes unusual stories can have groany, disappointing endings - good endings, it is said, are hard to write. Not these; Angie Fox keeps the action and tension going right to the end and all so far have come to a good, satisfying conclusion. I also like Angie's writing style; it is full of an energy and sparkle that keeps you listening.
I really enjoy the way the supernatural is mixed with the ordinary to produce a very unusual, gripping, page turner of a book that is filled with a lot of humanity too. Once again Tavia Gilbert gives an amazing performance as narrator and I think she is the final perfect ingredient that makes the story live for the listener.
I only review books I really like so you won't see a negative review from me. But trust me, I don't gush about everything I read, Audible knows I return quite a few.

A Frighteningly Gripping Start To This Cozy Series
In 2016 I downloaded the Kindle version because it was free and really enjoyed it. Angie Fox was a new-to-me author and I quickly got caught up in the story. I've been listening to more audiobooks this year so downloaded the Audible narration which I thoroughly enjoyed too.
I love Ms Fox's writing style. I find her books very easy to read and I like the way she weaves all the elements of her stories together. The mystery, the strained relationship between Verity and the rest of the townsfolk of Sugarland, Verity's financial struggles and, of course, the ghosts and their issues.
As a narrated book, I was impressed with Tavia Gilbert's performance. Loving the pace at which she read the story and her tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.
Although it was a quick read, it didn't lack depth or quality. I just got through it in double quick time because I couldn't stop listening! I'm going to have to readjust my understanding of what "Cozy" means as there were times that I was really spooked.
Southern Spirits is a great story. It has everything that I look for in a 5 star story; I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat (I was even scared at times) - I was gripped!
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with a paranormal focus.

Okay, not great
The story was okay but not a bit of a struggle to finish and not a series I'd want to pursue. The book works as a standalone fine, so I don't feel like I'm abandoning it by not reading the next one. The narration was the hardest part for me - everything sounded stressed and harried, which became rather grating and detracted from the tense moments. I don't want to be stressed out by what was meant to be a fun listen, but that was exactly how it felt.
