About this listen

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out.

He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right?

Not so much.

Most relevant
1. The constant insults between the shiny beer can, and the stupid monkey in command gets tiring.
2. It could also be shorter by cutting all the irrelevant half half finished talk when Skippy's attention wanders...
3. I'm also starting to question Skippy's unimaginable intelligence, since the Joe comes up with most if not all the good ideas...
4. This may not be so obvious to everyone but since I have a bit of electronics knowledge, blowing coils are kind of stupid, as coils aka a piece of wire wrapped around a core(usually made of ferromagnetic material) are among the most robust components, and when they do fail, it's usually nothing spectacular... (they either fail open and current stops flowing, or they short, and something blows in the circuit... The worst failure I can think of is the insulation ketches fire...)
Otherwise the story is ok, and the narration is great.

It's fine...

Sci-fi at its best

I absolutely love this series. I have listened to this book about 4 times. I love the storyline and the narrator.

I love the banter between Joe and Skippy, the way that when Joe has a good idea Skippy can't understand why a monkey can outsmart him.

I can't wait for the next book, and the one after that.

Skippy the magnificent and the Monkeys

Still love the story, but the tendency for Skippy to announce yet another impending disaster, there be no way out of it, then a deus ex machina be deployed can come just a bit too thick and fast. Sometimes, it's good to wallow (and ignore all the plot gurus who say every word has to lead a story on).

Good, but...

I have really enjoyed the first and second of the books in this series.
A fantastic jolly romp through space and across space-time.
Probably not for the aficionados of hard-core sci-fi. In fact the setting is quite incidental to the story and characters. It could just have well been set in a mythical dungeons and dragons sort of epoch. The charm of the tale lies in the interactions between the main characters.
I am hoping that in book 3, which I downloaded immediately I finished 2, that we do get a bit more involvement by some of the secondary characters in the story. But that it is a minor niggle.
Oh and RC Bray? Absolutely fabulous in these books. I have lots of books he has narrated in my library, but in this one he really does 'perform' it. He just makes me grin in this book.

Fabulous romp!
