Summary

Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic!

Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age 16, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She's been charged with supervising 12-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon.

But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon's droid, J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador's son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low. They decide to land on a nearby moon, which offers shelter but not much more. And unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the forest.

Ok. Slow start.

It's worth listening to just to find out what happened to a couple of people from previous books in the High Republic series. However, it's pretty average. Young people get stranded on a hostile planet.

Does have sound effects and music...

Seeing a lot of complaints about lack of production effort. Not sure if there was an accidental early release without, but what you can download as of March 2023 definitely has background sound effects and music. Not necessarily used optimally. There's a few places where, let's say, the "dark side music" would have fitted really well and it just wasn't employed. But don't skip this one because you thought it was the narrator in a soundproof booth, because it is not. Glad I gave it a chance.

Suggestions that the narrator fails to give unique voices to the characters are fair. She doesn't display the widest vocal range, and there are times when it is hard to tell that dialogue has switched from one to the other, so that could be improved a little. There are also mispronunciations and failures to identify appropriate intonations for certain races.

The story itself is simple, but sometimes that's what the listener wants? Not everything has to be a galaxy-changing crisis, and this isn't. This is a few youngsters stuck in a bad spot, making the best of it. For the most part, they are likeable characters, and it's kind of refreshing to have a close spotlight on a (relatively) small problem. Biggest complaint is that this story is very short and thus feels a bit meagre vs the 10-11 hours of some of the other High Republic audiobooks.

A very personal story with great characters

I really appreciate the subject of emotions and choosing the light. I find this story very inspiring and it contains some of my favorite aspects of Star Wars.

A Great Read

Another 'High Republic' short story and it has to be said one of the better ones. Gripping story with interesting characters I didnt mind investing time to get to know. Interesting concept story arc. Really enjoyed the narration, which I felt lended itself perfectly to this particular story. My only grip is that it wasnt much, much longer, but I am pleased the characters will appear again further down the line. Great Read

Solid book (definitely more for youngsters)

Picked this up as I'm a star wars nerd, it's fine my attention drifted away from it more than normal for myself. I'm not the demographic for this one but I reckon younger folk will enjoy the story more.

Unexciting and for a Younger Audience

This audiobook is not for me. I am a Star Wars fan but not a fan of the High Republic. This audiobook was wasted on me. It is for a younger audience. The narrator was good but I found the story uneventful and not what I was expecting.

Don't hate it, but it's a childrens book after all

I'd recommend it to High Republic completionists that want to experience all content in the High Republic, but it's an acceptable skip otherwise. That price tag is also way too high.

Great childrens book though

Dragged somewhat

It wasnt terrible, narration and sound effects were ok. The jedi characters were better developed than the other characters in it, but honestly I found the story lacking. It was very slow going and not much really happens throughout. Also it was surprisiny dark at times but then occasionally the dialogue is really childish. Its like it couldnt make up its mind on the age bracket. I'd say this is only worth listening to if you want to know more about the background of THR characters in it. They do crop up in some of the other media.
