About this listen

Held captive from January 1987 to November 1991, for much of the time in solitary confinement, Terry Waite wrote his autobiography in his head. Here is his own heart-rending account of an existence robbed of companionship and of emotional, physical, and mental stimulation. He describes how his recollections of life from childhood onwards helped him endure a life of monotony and fear in captivity and reveals the inner strengths, which enabled him to survive his captors’ often savage treatment. He tells of his resolve never to have any regrets, any false sentimentality, and any self-pity.

Taken on Trust is a deeply moving self-portrait of the man behind the headlines. It has become one of the classic accounts of man’s survival at the limits of human endurance. Read by the author.

Excellent

Great to hear the honest delivery of his hopes and fears throughout a terrible time of trial. Been meaning to read this for 20 years - so glad I listened instead.

Wow! Powerful and insightful

This was such a powerful account of your experience in captivity. I already want to read and learn more. Made me think a lot about loneliness and faith. Thank you for sharing.

What an amazing gentleman

This book should never have been written. Why? Because innocent people should never be held hostage by barbaric regimes.
Terry Waite is very intelligent dealing with his captors, but I'm sure it's his personality to avoid conflict and treat all people as you wish to be treated.
I loved his wonderful dulcet tone. I'm so pleased he narrated it.
I loved his writing his book in his head, slipping into the past and then back into present time.
Was it cathartic writing and years later narrating his book? Did he ever find Joy who sent him the John Bunyan postcard? I hope so for both questions.
Thank you TW for this amazing book. I shall certainly return to it in a year or two again.

simply brilliant

Superbly narrated by the author himself and interspersed with various tales from his life to break up the tales of years of solitary confinement, this was a truly engrossing listen.

Two stories woven cleverly together

the story of one man's struggle with the ordinary things of childhood and early life woven in between the story of a man out of his depth in a hostile and alien world

Wonderful

I have read Terry's book and didn't realise it was available on audio, read by the gentleman himself. I just needed to listen to this. He tells of his work and what he lived through with compassion in his voice. What a man and what he sacrificed to help others.

A captivating account

I adored hearing his account of the years a captive and it was truly gripping but the alternating chapters of reminiscing of his previous life for very tedious by the time he recounted every person he had met and worked with in Africa. It sprinted and crawled in direct measure of which part of his life he was describing
The hostage years were marvellously written and make the book worth the read
