About this listen

Cold cases, murder, lies, and an unimaginable truth.

Sydney Detective August Shaw has spent the last decade of work solving cold cases. His work is his entire life, and he's convinced a string of unsolved cold-case suicides are linked to what could be Australia's worst ever serial killer. Problem is, no one believes him.

Senior Constable Jacob Porter loves his life in the small town of Tallowwood in northern New South Wales. He runs summer camps for the local Indigenous kids, plays rugby with his mates, has a close family, and he's the local LGBTQIA+ Liaison and the Indigenous Liaison Officer.

When human remains are found in the camping grounds at Tallowwood Reserve, Jake's new case turns out to be linked to August's cold cases, and Jake agrees they're not suicides at all. With Jacob now firmly in August's corner, they face one hurdle after another. Even when more remains are found, they can't seem to gain ground. But when the body of a fellow police officer turns up under the same MO, it can't be ignored anymore.

August and Jake must trace the untraceable before the killer takes his next victim or before he stops one of them, permanently.

Contains mature themes.

A well written story with and interesting  concept.  The characters are likeable and the narration is very good.

Loved the story and MCs. Narration. good but I would have liked a stronger accent from the narrator.

Good and tense mystery, lovely romance.

My heart was having palpitations throughout this audiobook!

From beginning to end it was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, The twists, the turns and the backflips, the storyline was just amazing.
The characters, the sad past history of the detective, and how his life was/is intertwined with the web of deceit, lies and half-truths.

Lots of red herrings and cliffhanger moments and excellently narrated by Antony Ferguson.
This is the first time I have heard this narrator, and all I can say is “outstanding performance!”.

NRW definitely does not disappoint in this novel and especially if you are LGBTQ I A+, you were really enjoy this audiobook.

Definitely worth 5🌟‘s across the board!

Nice mystery with mm romance. Unfortunately the narration was somehow not so much to my taste. Can’t say it’s bad, but a bit too forceful, and I prefer a bit more intonation.

Good story, narration less my cup of tea

This wouldn't be my usual read but I do love N.R so decided I'd give it a go and it was really interesting and kept me guessing. N.R writes amazing mm but the mystery on top of that was so good.

Such an interesting read

Another great story by N.R. Walker. I was kept on edge the whole time, and while I suspected a certain person was the killer, I couldn’t have guessed the reality. August finally getting the closure he needed was the cherry on top.

Fantastic murder mystery

This was a fantastic book. N.R Walker's in-depth plotting and characterizations brought the story to life and had me on the edge of my seat for 10 hrs! Her portrayal of the systematic corruption in the police department and the cover-up of the murders of young gay men was heart-breaking, anger-inducing, and sadly, all too real. I was behind Detective August Shaw 110% and felt his bone-deep frustration at being given short shrift for so many years in his cold case investigations.

I would love to listen to more of N.R Walker's work in audio, but unfortunately, Joel Leslie does most of her books and I just cannot listen to his narration, so I won't buy those books.

I was very impressed with the narrator for Tallowwood, Antony Ferguson. He coped well with giving the characters slight Australian twangs without making a mockery of the accent and in turn dumbing down the serious topic. Bravo! Well done!

Gripping, well-written, well-narrated.

To be honest, my first impression of the English/Australian accents left me a little unsure of how it would work, being a book set in Australia. But it actually really worked and they differentiated the dialogue/narration well. The story was fantastic and well worth the listen.

Great story

Good story, though the end was of the classic trope kind
The story flowed very well, though the ending seemed to be a bit cluttered and rushed. One part of the ending with the water wasn’t convincing, and the epilogue was full of why’s
There was a bit too much swearing in sorts that wasn’t necessary
In all it was a good story

99% excellent story
