Summary
One call. That’s all it took to change everything. The sweet voice on the other end of the line delivered a blow I never saw coming. Fighting for our country’s freedom and staring death in the eye was nothing compared to this news.
History has one hell of a way repeating itself. Kate Wilson’s voice didn’t waver once as she turned my worst nightmare into a reality, and her words weaved a cruel poetic justice.
I hadn’t been back home in over two years. Once I pulled into the one-horse town, I was greeted by the gorgeous blonde.
Kate extended her hand and offered me a warm smile. The connection was made. The innocent beauty has no idea that she just flipped my life upside down.
She’d unearthed secrets that can never be buried.

Max and Kate!
Max had endured a childhood that no one should have to. It wasn’t until he was in high school that he learnt what the love and support of family was when he was taken in by his high school coach Jessie and his wife Jules. He went on to pursue a college football career but felt unfulfilled so he joined the military never expecting what he left behind.
Kate is a kindergarten teacher who would do anything for her students. One student in particular has stolen her heart and she can’t let his home situation continue so she contacts Max even if it means losing the job she loves.
This is an emotional story about love, family and new beginnings. There was no denying the connection between Max and Kate but if they are to have a future together they must first deal with the past. I thought the narrators did a great job of brings the characters and emotion of this story to life. 🎧 AudiobookObsession🎧

Such an emotional story
What a story! This was packed full of emotions and such difficult topics. I ached for Max's past. Besides being bully and abused his life, he tries. His high school girlfriend also had some issues and, since you can't tell a teenage anything, he got his heartbroken... ok a bit mutilated really. However, in the long haul military was his saving grace and off he went. I loved Kate. She was such a great teacher and cares so much about her students.
HJ Bellus writes some the most emotional storylines. I don’t think I’ve listened to Heather Edwards and Mark Whalbeck narrate previously. They were a good choice for Miss Bellus’s story… the feelings… I mean, these two just vibrated with it. They did such a fab job working through the gauntlet of emotions, the heat, just all of it!

Truly heartfelt!
I love Ms Bellus writing style. She brings emotion to all her characters and they are lovable as well as some are despised. Max has suffered so much and has come through all the hurt thanks to his coach and his drive. Kate is a loving teacher who goes out of her way to save poor little Finn. I laughed and cried with this story, my heart is always happy at the end. Both narrators did a great job at bringing the book to life.

Great emotion in this book
This book had me in tears. It’s such a lovely storyline of a child’s resilience at such a young age. As sad as it is this book shows that it can be turned around and have a HEA. Great narration.

That Was Yesterday
This story is so emotional, and touching. Max's backstory is very sad and seeing the similarities between his story and his son's is heartbreaking. Through all the sadness comes Kate's love for Finn and later her love for Max through Finn.
The narration by Heather Edwards & Mark Whalbeck was amazing. Looking forward to other narrations by them.

That Was Yesterday
I loved this story. It takes you through so many emotions. It is sad because there is drug addiction and child abuse in this book but it is heartwarming because there is a beautiful love story with Max and Kate and a happily ever after ending. Kate is such a great character. She is so kind and compassionate and went out of her way to help her student, Finn, even though she broke the rules and put her job in jeopardy. Max was pretty great, too. He saw himself in Finn and wanted to save him just like he had been saved as a child. I had never heard of HJ Bellus before this book so I have not listened to book 1 in this series but I definitely plan to so I can get the backstory on Jessie and Jules.
Heather Edwards and Mark Whalbeck did a great job bringing this story to life.

The story continues with the next generation
This book is about Max. The young man that Jessie and Jules took in from Yesterday Is Gone. Max is all grown up and has done his tour in the service. When a teacher named Kate gets in touch with him and tells him he has a son his world is flipped upside down. He is thrown back into his tragic childhood and he is determined his son will not repeat what he went through.
Kate is Finn's teacher and she is determined to help this little boy. When she finally meets his father she has no idea where her future will take her. Her love for Finn is quickly spread to his father.
Heather Edwards and Mark Whalbeck are great at Max and Kate. Their voices match the age range of the characters and they produce the emotion needed for the story. I loved listening to them.

Max & Kate
Give me a book like this anytime and I am happy. HJ Bellus continues her Yesterday series with letting us get to know Max. Max has had a tough childhood, full of trauma and heartbreak until Now several years later, he is contacted by Kate, a complete stranger, and she has news for him that will change his life. Bellus has once again found my sweet spot. She can find that emotional pull with the perfect story ine, suck me in and I fall into the heartbreak only to be put back together. We enjoy Kate who has a secondary story that had me both angry and enjoying the resolution. It's a story is full of hope, love, regret and happiness and let's us live through Max as we see that the past does not always predict the future. Can't wait to see where Bellus takes us next!
This is my first narration by Heather Edwards and Mark Whalbeck, and it flowed beautifully. The team had the perfect emotions and inflections. It was a great first listen and I will be watching for more.
