About this listen

As dawn breaks over London, the body of a young man is discovered in a windswept Notting Hill churchyard. The killer has left Detective Chief Inspector Grant Foster and his team a grisly, cryptic clue...

However it's not until the clue is handed to Nigel Barnes, a specialist in compiling family trees, that the full message becomes spine-chillingly clear. For it leads Barnes back more than one hundred years - to the victim of a demented Victorian serial killer. When a second body is discovered Foster needs Barnes's skills more than ever, because the murderer's clues appear to run along the tangled bloodlines that lie between 1879 and the present day. If Barnes is right about his blood-history, the killing spree has only just begun...

A slow start that needed some perseverance - but which was rewarded as the narrative progressed. An unusual story, populated by characters not immediately likeable, building nicely to a satisfying denouement. Good narration, except for consistently mispronouncing genialogy as geniology, throughout the reading. Lose 1 star for that! A good listen nevertheless.

A Good Listen ...

A very satisfying combination of historical and genealogical research with a contemporary crime drama. Set in Notting Hill and referring to that salubrious area's darker past.

What a fantastic"read". Twists and turns leading to an unexpected finale. Well written and very well narrated. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Intriguing, exciting

This came up as a recommend on the audible website. I can only say a big thank you, as I found this to be one of the best books I have listened to on my i-pod for well over two years.
As a great fan of Ian Rankin and the Rebus books it was interesting to listen to another detective storyline.
The story unfolds majestically, and you are transported with ease into both Victorian London and the study of geneology, which combine to form a fascinating insight.
The book itself is read brilliantly by Colin Mace who manages to carry across the female voice without sounding ridiculous.
I spent the whole book wondering where this would take me next, and each step of the investigation insisted thatI should find out the next twist in the tale.
In the end, I wanted to discover more of Dan Waddell's writing, to read or listen for myself, a mixture of mystery and intrigue.
download this you will not regret it!

Is this his first novel?

This is my first book by the author and I found it very interesting and gripping. I found it difficult to put the book down. The detective elements were interesting enough but adding it to the genealogy made it really a page turner. I was sad to come to the end of it and have purchased another book by the same author to read. Would recommend.

Genealogy and Criminology combined

This is the second time I have listened to this story. I enjoyed it the first time, but now I am researching my own family history, I understand more about the genealogy references. A great plot that links back to a case 150 years ago, who is the killer and why are they doing this? What is the reference carved on the victim's chest - enter the genealogy expert to help solve the crime. Would recommend this to all who enjoy a good detective story.

Unusual

I really enjoyed this ingeniously-plotted book. The author introduces a great deal of interesting information about tracing family trees as a backdrop to an intriguing detective story that switches back and forth between a modern series of murders and a similar series in the 19th century. Like the best of classic detective fiction the motive for the modern murders is highly complex and contrived, bearing little resemblance to real-life crimes, but that's what makes it such a great listen.
The narrator is very good.

Ingenious combination of genealogy and detection

What a superb story, so different from many run-of-the-mill books of this genre. Characterisation is good and the reader makes identification of the different characters, through voice alone, easy. Dan Waddell skillfully weaves crime fiction with geneological research in a tale that had me guessing almost to the end. I'm looking forward to downloading his next book.

An outstanding book

This book has a wonderful balance of characterisation, pace and place. Beautifully written genuinely rich in suspense - the best part of the book is the ability to make the routine research on family history so compelling.
