Summary

An electrifying account of the Cali Cartel beyond its portrayal on Netflix.

From the ashes of Pablo Escobar's empire rose an even bigger and more malevolent cartel. A new breed of sophisticated mobsters became the kings of cocaine. Their leader was Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela - known as the Chess Player due to his foresight and calculated cunning.

Gilberto and his terrifying brother, Miguel, ran a multi-billion-dollar drug empire like a corporation. They employed a politically astute brand of thuggery and spent $10 million to put a president in power. Although the godfathers from Cali preferred bribery over violence, their many loyal torturers and hit men were never idle.

We live in a corrupt system but without the dirty money we wouldn’t survive

I have watched Narcos on Netflix, this book was interesting and informative, I have learnt more about the drug cartels and it’s extremely disturbing how involved some people are, we live in a corrupt system but without the dirty money, we wouldn’t be able to survive.

Listened to all books in this series

Good listen but has a lot more about Pablo Escobar than the Cali cartel ! There’s a book in this series that covers Pablos story and I was expecting more on the Cali Cartel but Pablo always seems to take up a large part of the book. Good listen though, and enjoyed it 5*****

Narcos in depth

I have watched the Netflix series Narcos and so was very interested in listening to this audiobook. It did not disappoint. It was an in depth, obviously well researched and very well presented look at the drug cartels and all the major players. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this subject. Well worth a listen!

AMAZING

What did you like most about The Cali Cartel?

Excellent up-to-date book about the Cali cartel that deconstructs the war on drugs, and is so gripping that you won’t want to put it down

Mostly copied information

This author claims to be an expert in such things but is only really presenting information that is already in the public domain. Still very interesting if you are new to the subject so a good starting point hence the good review

Eye opening

Extremely interesting book that draws you in slowly then completely amazes you. Filled with action and sometimes giving me goosebumps, it was shocking to hear everything in this book because whilst we know this is explains what has actually happened in the past, the dealings and the murders sound too extraordinary to not be fiction! Really good writing that pulls you in, I was upset that it had to end!
