some useful tips, advice is a little dated

The Consultant’s Bible has some useful tips for wanna-be successful consultants. Even for experienced consultants, there are some gold nuggets in there. For me, it wasn’t the "wow" book I was told it might be.

There are some “Alanisms” and some “bible” points which help provide clarity on the advice being offered.

I have a bias toward executive agility and “ambidexterity.” I winced at some points of the book, for example, when the author said something along the lines of:

No one outside of HR talks about the need for servant leadership.
The best leader is a benevolent dictator.
Generally disrespecting HR

There are references to 2016 and the pandemic, so it’s not like it’s a book of its time or anything.

But the author was clear about his support for DEI, to his credit

A valuable classic for the solo consultant

I read the original many years ago and came back for a refresh. Whilst the style won't be for everyone, and I'd quibble with a few details, there is so much value in this book for the average solo consultant. Indeed, as I come back to this, I can see the validity of so much of Alan's advice. It was also great to have him narrate his own book. It felt quite personal and totally authentic.

Really poor - just a ‘filler’ book

I have previously enjoyed Alan Weiss’ books, but I was shocked at how poor this was. Weiss has written this during the Covid pandemic, and it shows, as it is just a ‘filler’ book where I struggled to find even some useful nuggets, as the emphasis throughout was on how he made it, rather than providing useful strategic consulting tips. Give this one a miss, and try something else or one of Weiss’ earlier works.
