About this listen

1949. An unsigned letter arrives on the desk of Chief Inspector Derry of the Canterbury police. Enclosed is a jade pendant, identical to the one that went missing from the body of an actress murdered a decade previously. The case had been shut quickly at the time - the accused vagrant gave a written confession and was sentenced to the gallows - but the necklace was never recovered. Until now.

Inspector Madden is asked to investigate the letter's worrying claims by his old friend and former Chief Inspector Angus Sinclair, who fears the wrong man may have been hanged on his watch. But with a world war separating Madden from the murder, the truth will not come easy....

Brilliant great read as usual. The series gets better and better. Excellent writer and characters.

Top class.

I love all of Rennie Airth books. The plot is believable but the characters are the thing I wait to revisit, with an authenticity to the storyline given the author's background taking you back a few decades. It has no unecessary salaciousness which many poorer writers employ to bolster their lesser talents, going for the cheap thrill. Very enjoyabe and well read.

Wonderful book

I loved it it, I do hope that we get another, something that brings it very personal to the central character as you can then see why the first four were brillant, the next I hope needs to be closer to home,.... Something personal to madden.. But still brillant. The narrator is just great and has been with all the series

It is slower, but please write another...
