About this listen
When Josephine Tey inherited a remote Suffolk cottage from her godmother, it came full of secrets. There were the infamous Red Barn murders, committed in the grounds a century before, and still casting a shadow over the village. And there was Lucy Kyte, the mysterious beneficiary of her godmother’s will, who no-one in the close-knit village would admit to knowing.
Trapped in this isolated community and surrounded by shadows of obsession, abuse and deceit, can Josephine untangle history from present danger and prevent a deadly cycle beginning once again?

Atmosphere
There is a wonderful sense of place and season , so evocative that I felt I was actually there . The story and the characters are all intriguing and vivid but I enjoyed the description best. A mystery that also has something to say
I am now addicted to this series

Another great listen.
I’d love to see a TV series made out of these fab characters. Suffolk accent on this one decidedly dodgy, but it is tricky! Great weaving of history, legend and fiction. Delighted to see Sybil Andrews popping up.

The gripping story
The actor reading this book was outstanding. She brought the characters to life in such a brilliant way. The whole story was beautifully conceived, brilliantly researched and riveting throughout.

I couldn't put it down
I enjoyed this book very much and I found the story within the story fascinating. I couldn't stop listening, but I wanted the book to last forever. The narration was excellent and it greatly enhanced the overall experience. I have read all the books in this series and I am looking forward to the publication of the next book.

Where was the Suffolk accent?
Fascinating twist on a well known story. However the local accent was not from Suffolk.

Brilliant language and storytelling
This is my first Upson book and I listened to some of the historic passages again and again as there are proper jewels in expression and setting. Great story too.

Dwells rather more on a miserable life
As always I loved the author's writing style and the wonderful narration of Sandra Duncan. But this story was rather more about the misery of a character's life than the unravelling of a murder mystery. I personally found it had a more lowering effect on my spirits!

Different from the rest of the series
This was a quiet, mildly enjoyable book but I missed Archie who appears only briefly. Look forward to a return to the more familiar structure and cast list with the next one. Good for anyone local to the Bury St Edmunds area.

enjoyable
Slow to start but enjoyable. once I got into it. It's good how the characters become more rounded with each book.
