About this listen

Homicide Detective Max Rupert never fully accepted his wife's death, even when he believed that a reckless hit and run driver was the cause. But when he learns that in fact she was murdered, he devotes himself to hunting down her killers. Most of his life he had thought of himself as a decent man. But now he's so consumed with thoughts of retribution that he questions whether he will take that last step and enact the vengeance he longs for.

On a frozen lake near the US-Canadian border, he wrestles with a decision that could change his life forever, as his hatred threatens to turn him into the kind of person he has spent a career bringing to justice.

Critic reviews

"Eskens infuses the old this-time-it's-personal trope with raw urgency, righteous indignation, and enough scorching action to melt every trace of the Minnesota snow in his finest hour to date." ( Kirkus, Starred Review)

It’s like popping a pimple … I knew it had to come to a head so didn’t really expect it to be uplifting !
Hoping the next one finds him back on a better path

Make sure you read them in order!! Want to read more from this brilliant author who is new to me.
After reading these books, I'm spoilt. Nothing else comes close for total absorption. Eskens is a very talented writer and the narrator makes the writing even more absorbing. I can't recommend highly enough.

Compelling read from start to finish

Wow. What an absorbing and gripping rollercoaster ride of a book. Will he, won’t he? Did she, didn’t she? Twists and turns and an emotional wringing out. I’ve loved all the books in the series so far, but Book 1 has always towered above the others for me in terms of story and emotional punch. But this one might be a close second. I wasn’t sure at first as it seemed so dark, but the narrative grips and gets more and more detailed as the hours tick by. Highly recommended. Thank you Allen Eskens for writing such powerful stories, and thank you RC Bray for the excellent narration.

Excellent. One of best in the series?

I enjoyed the 3rd of the series a little less than the other 2 as there were fewer turns in the plot, but as a piece of writing that puts you in a place at a certain moment in the character’s life and his literal physical situation in a moment in time. It was stunning. I was cold in the middle of summer

Study of cold

An interesting plot which gives much food for thought. It is very dark in places and unflinchingly gruesome but not to be gratuitous.
Max Rupert is finally on the trail of his wife's killer in a story full of twists and turns. It's a bit slow and repetitive occasionally but still is a gripping and thought provoking read. The characters are well rounded and convincing and you can feel the chill of the Minnesota winter as you make the journey along with Max.
Another good read from Allen Eskens.

A deep, dark descending indeed.
