Summary
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough (Barbarians at the Gate, Public Enemies, Big Rich) recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer who had raped and mutilated six women, murdering three of them. Yet the town had denied all early signs of the radical evil that was growing within Corwin. What had led the local media to ignore his early rapes? Why had the local Presbyterian Church tried to shield him from prison? Why had local law enforcement been unable to solve and prosecute his murders as they continued?
Burrough is widely admired as a master storyteller, and this chilling tale raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.
This title contains mature themes, including physical and sexual violence, that some listeners may find unsettling.

Kinda pointless as a book
The story is horrific but it’s not exactly exploring anything groundbreaking, he could have just made a true crime video on YouTube about it and told exactly the same amount of information as in this book, it feels like making a book for the sake of it rather than having a great load of info to share that it requires a whole book length to fit it all in.

Very Informative
It feels disrespectful of me to describe a story like this as "brilliant" or "entertaining" so, with great respect to the author, narrator and families of the victims I believe this book to be very informative.
The human who carried out these killings is well described as 'the demon next door'.
At so many points in this book I gasped at the lack of penalty he received or the way it was described how it was probably the fault of the victims. Unfortunately this still happens today which also serves to make this book a cautionary tale.

Well read, but pretty tedious
The book is only 2.5 hours long however even this feels too long. It would have been better being a 20 minute youtube video with the highlights of what was in this book. Felt like a lot of stuff that didn't positively contribute to the story

A good little short true Crime story
a short true Crime story, narrator did a good job, sounded more like a podcast episode than an actual book.
Interesting how Danny managed to slip through the cracks to commit more crimes
