About this listen

Gabby Mays wishes she had her future figured out, like her gorgeous roommate Anna-Marie, who has just landed a role on the hit soap opera Passion Medical. Gabby would give anything to find a career she’s half as passionate about as Anna-Marie is about acting - and a love life that isn’t comprised of nights with a party-sized bag of Doritos and her Netflix account.

When Gabby becomes a recurring extra on Passion Medical, she finds a job she’s surprisingly great at. Even better, her old crush and ex-boss - the sexy, sweet Will Bowen - is writing the scripts, allowing Gabby lots of quality flirting time at the craft services table.

But between feuding divas, fake Emmys, and Gabby’s growing concern that Will might not see her as anything more than a friend, her life on set is quickly becoming a drama worthy of the soaps.

The Extra is a stand-alone romance novel with PG-13 rated content, no cliffhanger, and a swoon-worthy happily-ever-after.

Charming in its simple complexity

So the title is an oxymoron but it describes this book, as a simple attraction between two characters not meant to be in love but find a way. This is simple, the complexity comes with the themes, characters, and all the actors' names' when onset.

Flanagan gives a masterful performance of the book, all the characters are easily distinguishable and the narration is made intriguing.

Good book, but narrators voice doesn’t sound 23

I was a bit torn about the book. I hadn’t listened to a book with an acting background before and the story line seemed interesting, so I kept going despite not quite liking the narrator. She didn’t do anything wrong and narrated perfectly fine, but she just didn’t fit the 23 year old character. I am glad I am trough it and didn’t need to pay for it.

The extra

The story is a disappointingly tedious angstfest with self absorbed characters. The reader did her best. The author writes well

A busy book

I listened to the end but this listen wasn't my cup of tea.

Gabby and her family had everything going on, different jobs, sibling arguments, parents breaking up, annoying sister, a brother in a posh uni who ended up a drug addict, major money issues for her family, lies, sex, drama, tv show, best friend drama, then romance for Gabby.

The one thing I agree with was like gabby doing temping work, it took me a long time to find my passion for a job/career. The narrator did her job well although she didn't sound 23 years old.

I wouldn't have wanted to waste a credit on this, so I can't recommend it.
