About this listen

Murder. It’s a family affair.

In the midst of one of the worst winters Chicago has seen in years, the body of missing teenager Ella Reynolds is discovered under the surface of a frozen lake.

She’s been missing for three weeks...the lake froze over three months ago.

Detective Sam Porter and his team are brought in to investigate, but it’s not long before another girl goes missing. The press believes the serial killer Anson Bishop has struck again, but Porter knows differently. The deaths are too different. There’s a new killer on the loose.

Porter, however, is distracted. He’s still haunted by Bishop and his victims, even after the FBI have removed him from the case. His only leads: a picture of a female prisoner and a note from Bishop: ‘Help me find my mother. I think it’s time she and I talked.’

As more girls go missing and Porter’s team race to stop the body count rising, Porter disappears to track down Bishop’s mother and discover that the only place scarier than the mind of a serial killer is the mind of the mother from which he came.

Perfect for fans of Helen Fields, Val McDermid and Jo Nesbo, this gripping and twisted thriller will have you wondering, how do you stop a killer when he’s been trained from birth?

Critic reviews

"J.D. Barker is a one-of-a-kind writer and that’s a rare and special thing. Stephen King comes to mind and Lee Child, John Sanford. All one-of-a-kinds. Don’t miss anything J.D. writes." (James Patterson)

"Not since Hannibal Lecter had a friend for dinner has a serial killer been so skillfully rendered on the page." (Taylor Elmore, writer/producer of Justified and Limitless)

"Gritty, masterful suspense. A dark ride into the mind of a genius killer, and those tasked with stopping him for good. Impeccably written with Barker’s trademark wit and penchant for killer detail. Lee Child, you've met your match." (Tosca Lee, New York Times best-selling author)

First the 1st book is the best audio book I have ever listened to, along with the best stories I have heard. Unfortunately the narrator in the 2nd book is terrible it's like an audition for a film trailer voice-over. The positive is the quality of the actual book and the characters. The story picks up 4 months after the 1st and the start of a murder spree that becomes apparent is linked somehow to 4 MK. The quality of the narrative is as well written as the 1st and despite the narrator I have to recommend this as essential listening. Just a warning this is the 1st of a 2 part tale and ends with to be continued.

A poor narrator but perseverance is rewarding.

Listened to first book and loved it, narration of the second is just awful, incredibly slow and very bad intonation. Sadly it appears the same person is narrating the third so I’m afraid I shall be reading that one myself....

Good story spoiled by narrator

Could not stop listening to this book and will be downloading the next one as soon as I post this

Fantastic

great book but the narrator really made it a bit of a struggle to get through. Just too dramatic where it doesn't need to be. If you can get past that and you've read the first book then def worth a listen.

Great story, bad narrator

Loved the story a lot, however the narrator was really boring and slow. Wished they kept the narrators from the first book.

Loved it.

The narrator was SO irritating. Someone should seriously tell him that Anything, Something, Nothing, etc is pronounced as it is written, ING, NOT INK. I cringed all the way through this listening to him say anythink, somethink and so on.
Also his American accent is terrible. I spotted right away that he hailed from the West Midlands. No American reads Garage as Garidge. Im pretty sure he's also unaware of punctuation and how it separates words and sentences...so many times he reads it as if there is no punctuation at all.
I really hope he's not the narrator for the next instalment because I couldn't stand another book having to listen to him!

Awful narration

Another brilliant book but as other reviewers have said the narrator is awful! In the end I found that speeding up the narrative helped. This managed to get rid of some of the awful, highly inappropriate pauses that this narrator felt was necessary! It was like he was auditioning for an action movie.
However, the story itself is brilliant!

Awesome but…

Written in the style of the narrator of this book:

This… book has… a great… story. Carrying on… from… the first in… the series. However… it… is let down… by… the choice of… narrator.

Each chapter… is introduced… like… this “Chapter… 23… day… two… Claire… 4……. 23…….. pm”.

Aarrgghh

Please bring the narrator back from the first one.

Interesting story totally obliterated by the awful, stilted performance of the reader. Spoiled it totally for me

Awful performance
