Summary
A fast-paced, thrilling horror novel that follows a group of heroines to die for, from the brilliant New York Times best-selling author of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires.
In horror movies, the final girl is the one who’s left standing when the credits roll. The one who fought back, defeated the killer and avenged her friends. The one who emerges bloodied but victorious. But after the sirens fade and the audience moves on, what happens to her?
Lynnette Tarkington survived a massacre 22 years ago, and it has defined every day of her life since. And she's not alone. For more than a decade she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, putting their lives back together, piece by piece. That is until one of the women misses a meeting and Lynnette's worst fears are realized - someone knows about the group and is determined to take their lives apart again, piece by piece.
But the thing about these final girls is that they have each other now, and no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.
Critic reviews
"Sizzles with action, originality and a gleaming concept as sharp as a scalpel.” (Charlaine Harris)
“A (bloody) valentine to the slasher franchises of the VHS era, but also a smart novel about survivor guilt and the concept of the enduring heroine.” (Kim Newman, author of Anno Dracula)
“Pray for morning, wish for speed and be as quiet as you can, it doesn't matter Grady's Hendrix's Final Girl Support Group already knows where you live and breathe.” (Stephen Graham Jones)

My favourite book of 2021
I am a big Grady Hendrix fan and preordered this book before release. This is my new favourite Grady Hendrix and I think that anyone who is a fan of horror and horror films will love this and that the voice acting adds an extra dimension that really elevates everything.

Interesting and thought provoking
An interesting story, some parts I thought would have been clearer/made more sense in the written format, I didn’t really like any of the characters and I think I got a little lost in the middle of the story somewhere. But it was different and interesting and did make me think about personal safety and the depiction of women in violence. Definitely worth a listen.

fun romp through slasher pop culture
I was a huge fan of The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires so I eagerly awaited the release of the Final Girl Support Group. It's very different in content and scares but has the same common theme of badass women who refuse to be trampled down by society or by monsters. Overall, I found myself really enjoying the story but it was a bit convoluted at times. The story mainly is told from the perspective of one "final girl" Lynnette which works really well for the tone as you do veer back and forth between wondering how reliable of a narrator she is.
I will say that having some knowledge of slasher flicks would benefit any listeners/readers as many of the characters are based on the "final girls" of those slasher flicks and their backstories are constantly referenced.
As for the narration, it was really compelling and emotive and really pulled me into the story. Only caveat is that the story occasionally doesn't translate too well to being an audiobook (there are news clippings, forums posts and excerpts of screenplay dialogue that intersperse the book which makes for awkward narration)

could've been better with a different narrator
Good story, but the narrator let it down.
could've been a really gripping listen with a better narrator.

Top tip before reading!!!
Sooooo, I bought this book and was very much excited for it. Being a huge Grady Hendrix fan. The actual story was great. Twists & turns. 80’s horror movie feel. I can even see a spin off with the Heather character. What’s the deal with the dream king? Sounds like it could be a Freddy Kruger type story. The BIG Problem being the narrator. Smacking her lips, drawing every bloody word out. It kept putting me off. So then I had lightbulb moment. If you increase the speed on the app by 1. It flows so much better. Then I could dig in and enjoy.

Some issues with narration
There is a section in chap 14 where the text repeats - an alternate part has been left in. There are also some quite amateur like pauses - feels like the audio could have been edited better.

Fantastic book for horror lovers and feminists
Absolutely brilliant book, engaging from the very beginning and lots of fun references to famous horror films. Challenges the sexist norms of the genre and is even narrated fantastically by the lead actress of the first Friday 13th film. Highly recommend.

At some points predictable
It was a okay read, not very often I feel. Movie version would be better. But this is one of them. I liked the meta call backs to stories we know but feels a little slow in places.
