Summary

An authorized biography of the creator of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, with an introduction by Douglas Adams.

Douglas Adams is one of the most celebrated science fiction and comedy writers of his generation. He is best known for the best-selling radio, book, TV, and film series The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, along with Dirk Gently's Detective Agency, episodes of Doctor Who, and his collaborations with members of Monty Python.

In this lively and entertaining biography, Jem Roberts examines the struggles Douglas went through to get the original Hitchhikers radio series commissioned, his subsequent successes, frustrations, and battles with writer's block.

The audiobook is narrated by Kris Dyer and was originally produced for the RNIB Talking Books studio.

Praise for the book:

"Jem manages to write about popular cultural institutions with knowledge and affection, while avoiding the dismal traps of nerdy fanboyism on the one hand or grandiose cultural pseudo-intellectualism on the other. His research is flawless and the results are readable, illuminating and delightful." (Stephen Fry, actor and author)

"Roberts’s lively conversational prose never tries to ape Adams’s own style, but tells the story of his life in an accessible, compelling flow...a thoroughly absorbing read." (SFX magazine)

Great biography of a great man

Lots to take in about the amazing Douglas Adams and the unique frood he was. Truly thinking out of the box and seeing the world differently. I will be listening to this again or might even buy the book. Clearly read by someone who admired and loved him. An amazing tribute, such a shame he's still not with us to share his unique thoughts on life the universe and everything :(

Illuminating and entertaining

The main focus of The Frood is not so much on the biographical (though that ground is certainly covered) but rather on a forensic and insightful investigation into the origins and evolution of Adams' work - including of course H2G2 in its various iterations, but his many other creative projects are given full attention. The level of detail may be too much for listeners with only a casual interest, but for a fan of Adams or British comedy in general, the book is a goldmine, providing real insight into the creative influences and process, along with plenty of amusing anecdotes about the inner workings and frustrations of the BBC and Hollywood. And it's read with enthusiasm and appropriately wry humour by the charming - dare I say froody - Kris Dyer.

The Best Adams Bio To-Date

Roberts does an excellent job covering both the public and private life of one of our great humorists. As a life-long Hitchhiker's fan I was pleasantly surprised at the new stuff brought to the table hear such as the plethora of unused ideas for HG2G and even some abandoned writing. As well as thorough indepth analysis on the work produced in Adams' lifetime and since his untimely death in 2001.
