About this listen

Sarah's grandfather was a horseman of rare talent - only the exceptional are allowed into France's elite riding academy, Le Cadre Noir. But life took an unexpected turn, and now from a council estate in east London, the Captain hopes to train his granddaughter towards a better life.

Natasha is a lawyer whose job is to represent the best interests of children. Her confidence in her judgement has been shaken and her marriage has died - but an encounter with Sarah may lead to Natasha learning all she needs to know about life from a fourteen-year-old girl and a large horse named Boo.

I admit I was drawn to this book because it involved horses, but I had forgotten that by the time I got round to reading it, and despite a slow start as we are given the background to the Captain's equestrian talent, I enjoyed getting to know Natasha, whose faults are clear from the start, but that doesn't make her a less sympathetic protagonist.
I've heard about inner city stables, although I've never been to one, and I guess the horses must be very used to walking out in heavy urban traffic and busy parks, but I did find I had to suspend disbelief on a number of occasions at some of the antics Sarah and her horse got up to, particularly in the latter chapters of the book. These adventures might have been more plausible even 40 odd years ago, when traffic and roads were generally calmer, and the sight of horses on a busy road was less unusual, but it was really stretching the bounds of plausibility in the modern world. Still, the characters were so captivating, and the story was so compelling, that I was prepared to overlook the implausibilities, and just go with it. Can't say any more without giving the plot away, so will just add that a superbly talented narrator really brought this well crafted story to life, and her spoken French was also spot on. I do like it when the producers pay attention to how the languages other than English are relayed in an audiobook - it sounds so ridiculous when these are mangled by a narrator with no knowledge of pronunciation in a strong English accent. A very enjoyable and compelling listen!

Can't resist a book with horses in it

A lovely storyline that makes you want to listen more. very relaxing extremely well read that brings a smile to your face as well as a tear to your eye at times. Jojo in the end explains a bit about her background and where the base of the book came from. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy listening 😉

I really enjoyed this book after the beginning which nearly put me off! I am so glad I carried on, it is a wonderful story. I did find the narrator a little over enthusiastic in her reading.

A lovely story
