Summary

THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER, JULY 2023

When frantic, dishevelled Edie Ledwell appears in the office begging to speak to her, private detective Robin Ellacott doesn't know quite what to make of the situation. The co-creator of a popular cartoon, The Ink Black Heart, Edie is being persecuted by a mysterious online figure who goes by the pseudonym of Anomie. Edie is desperate to uncover Anomie's true identity.

Robin decides that the agency can't help with this - and thinks nothing more of it until a few days later, when she reads the shocking news that Edie has been tasered and then murdered in Highgate Cemetery, the location of The Ink Black Heart.

Robin and her business partner Cormoran Strike become drawn into the quest to uncover Anomie's true identity. But with a complex web of online aliases, business interests and family conflicts to navigate, Strike and Robin find themselves embroiled in a case that stretches their powers of deduction to the limits - and which threatens them in new and horrifying ways . . .

A gripping, fiendishly clever mystery, The Ink Black Heart is a true tour-de-force.

Brilliant as usual

Robert Galbraith has done it again. Absolutely brilliant and so clever.

As usual, with all JK Rowling and Robert Galbraith books, there are so many twists and turns, The Ink Black Heart keeps you on the edge of your seat and not want to put it down.

I can’t praise it highly enough for its ingenious plot and story, and for the amazing voice of the audible book which Robert Glenister reads so very well - especially as there is so much social media context to read.

Thank you for such a brilliant book in every way

updated review

I was looking forward to this book so much and couldn't wait to download it ...
Robert glenister is fantastic .. he does a wonderful job
I did have to keep going through the early Twitter/chat room messages back and forth but stuck with it and after a while it didn't bother me .. it's how the world seems to be now.
It showed how so many hide behind a keyboard and how vulnerable people really are in the social media of today.
I look forward to the next book ☺️

A very modern subject.

I didn't read any reviews before reading as I trusted RG and Robert Glenister. It's true it is difficult to take in all of the chat room chats. As I was listening I thought it would be a better book to read Instead of listen too. I may buy the book. But I loved the plot, the comings and goings between Strike and Robin. I did suspect the killer, although I did suspect most of the unsavory characters at one time or another. I'm going to listen to it again right away, as there is so much Information to take in. Robert Glenister is by far the best narrator on audible. He switches between characters with such ease and distinction. A true performer.

Nearly 33 hours of excellence

I’m now 75 and if I can cope with the reiteration of Twitter/chat room information I can’t understand why so many people seem to have a problem with it and ignore how good the story is. I thoroughly enjoyed The Ink Black Heart and agree with another reviewer about the importance of highlighting the prevalence of online trolls and how much damage and misery they cause.
I’m a huge fan of J K Rowling and love these Strike novels and certainly wasn’t disappointed with this one. As ever Robert Glenister’s narration was superb.

Gripping from beginning to end

Strike and Robyn must journey into the dark underbelly of social media and online gaming to uncover the identity of a murderer. As usual, the story takes many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.
Paul Glennister's narration is brilliant.

Director asleep at the wheel

Somebody should have told Glennister how to pronounce Boi and Bois, because it’s not ‘bwah’ like the French for box. Every time Glennister got it so wrong it took me right out of the book. Criminal neglect from the director/producer. Overall the book is engaging enough though it does feel like a bit of the remix of The Silkworm. Always nice to hang out with Strike and Robin, and good to see JKR commenting on Troll culture, she’s been one of the highest profile victims of online abuse in recent times.

a bit boring

I had pre ordered this so persevered. I found all the gaming and Internet feed confusing as so many different characters and basically boring. I finally got more interested after chapter 70. Good ending though. The narrator excellent.

Excellent depth of characters

I get it, if reading the text version you would skim the names on the chat exchanges, but the audio reads them in full. But this didn't detract from the intricate plot development for me. I was so happy to be back with Strike and Robin again! I love the characters and watching the relationships evolve, no one does this better than Galbraith /Rowling. The subjects covered are gritry and relevant as ever and I think she's done an amazing job of creating such a vivid story in this setting. My only disappointment is that I got through it so quickly and now have the long wait ahead until the one!

Another great Strike story

But.. it’s probably better read than listened to due to the long online threads been read out for each comment, which you’d probably skim over when reading but makes it monotonous to listen to. However, the story is still excellent and I really enjoyed the this installment of Strike and Robin and I can’t wait for the next one already
