About this listen

"Jakob Larson is going to be the death of me."

That’s what I think every time he strides into my bar. The Kings of Kearny run this small Texas town, and Jakob is their chief enforcer. The Viking, they call him. He’s a criminal. As dangerous as he is sexy. The kind of man who makes my inner cavewoman sit up and take notice. Him big. Make strong babies. Bring home mammoth for dinner.

I’m ready to indulge her desires, but just for one night. Unfortunately, Jakob has other plans.

Someone in town is breaking one of the cardinal rules set by the leader of The Kings. And Jakob thinks they’re using my grandmother’s nursing home as a front for their illicit activities. Now I’m neck-deep in trouble with him, and every time I think I’ve figured out what’s really going on, Jakob reveals another piece of the puzzle. I need to figure out how far I’m willing to go to protect this town. How far I’m willing to go with Jakob. Because if I fall for him, there’s no going back. No hope for a peaceful ending. But Jakob is the kind of man who makes me think that peaceful is overrated, and that descending into darkness with him could lead to something even better than a Happily Ever After.

From the very first page, I was hooked. This book had me completely captivated from start to finish. It offers a beautiful love story in all the right deprived and unconventional ways , but what really sets it apart is the perfect mix of thrill, suspense, and just the right touch of naughtiness. It’s packed with excitement and danger—the kind of intensity I crave in a great read. I couldn’t put it down!

Loved this book from the first word

I really love this author - I find quite a lot of contemporary romance rather generic with repetitive tropes , but Navessa Allen’s stories are exciting and fresh and hot!! I really believe in the characters and she writes so well that the chemistry between the main protagonists is totally believable. I’ve listened to all her audible books now, can’t wait for her next story to be available .

The story had potential - who doesn’t love a good MC story? However it never reached its potential. The plot was thin and the romance was missing. I bought that they had lust for each other but didn’t buy much else. It was too insta love for my liking. The whole plot around the nursing home was somewhat convoluted but somehow at the same time thin. The bad guy was caught far too easily following the introduction of a new character we knew nothing about previously and who we didn’t see again, and suddenly poof! Problem solved. Then everything was wrapped up very quickly. The side characters hardly had any work to do. I don’t know if this is an early work by the author reinvigorated, but if so it would explain its lack of substance. There was a lot of detail about things there didn’t need to be detail about, and not much detail about the stuff we wanted to know

I was also very fed up of being preached at about the military and what it’s like when they leave service. I got it, they were all ex military and it was tough, I didn’t need it hammering home.

The narrators were great, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough to lift this above 3 stars.

Good narration couldn’t save it!
