About this listen
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women. They contain all the adventure and mystery that her real life lacks.
Fletcher Walker began life as a street urchin, but is now the most successful author in the Penny Dreadful market, that is until Charles King started taking all of his readers. No one knows who King is, including Fletcher's fellow members of the Dread Penny Society, a fraternity of authors dedicated to secretly fighting for the social and political causes of their working-class readers. The group knows King could be an asset with his obvious monetary success, or he could be the group's undoing as King's readership continues to cut into their profits.
Determined to find the elusive Mr. King, Fletcher approaches Miss Black. As a fellow author, she is well known among the high-class writers; perhaps she could be persuaded to make some inquiries as to Mr. King's whereabouts? Elizabeth agrees to help Fletcher, if only to insure her secret identity is never discovered. What neither author anticipated was the instant attraction, even though their social positions dictate the impossibility of a relationship.
For the first time, Elizabeth experiences the thrill of a cat-and-mouse adventure reminiscent of one of her own novels as she tries to throw Fletcher off her scent. But the more time they spend together, the more she loses her heart. Its upper-class against working-class, author against author, where readers, reputations, and romance are all on the line.

The whole story/theme is absolutely genius.
It put into perspective just how difficult it is to come up with a good story. Especially since most of the characters are writers themselves.
This book was thrilling, clever and beautifully told. I flew through it, and never felt it was too slow or hard to understand.
The characters were a very colourful bunch, each with their own flovour and personality. I especially liked Stone and Brogan(and his fiesty sister).
Despite the complicated plot and intricate characters, S. M. Eden still managed to add a wonderful romance.
Also, I must add that the narration was phenomenal! I absolutely adore Justine Eyer's performance. Her accents are especially enjoyable.
An added bonus was the bit of humor from all characters(often dry but always witty) which made me smile.
I really loved this book and definitely recommend it.
Thank you Sarah M. Eden and Audible for sharing this Fantastic Story.
Bloody Brilliant!✨

What a skillfully constructed novel. Three stories all tied up into one, serving each other as the story progressed. And never some insurmountable impediment stopping our hero and heroine from finding one another! I just loved it.
Justine Eyre was excellent, I especially enjoyed Fletcher’s scruffy accent. She did a commendable job with Stone’s southern US accent. Sadly she still hasn’t gotten her Scottish/Irish down. But I always find myself forgiving her for it. Not everyone can be Mary Jane Wells or Alex Wyndham when it comes to Irish, Scottish and Welsh accents. And JE always invests an emotion in her reading that I find unmatched. So if you can hear past Brogan’s accent, you should be happy.
I’ve also discovered the wonder that is Sarah M Eden and can’t wait to read more of her stuff. JE should narrate more of Eden’s work.
Highly recommend to anyone that wants a fulfilling, fun, and engaging story. There are a pleasant number of loose ends that want addressing which makes me hopeful for more in the Dread Penny Society could be forthcoming.
What a refreshing delight!
