About this listen
Suspended from his job with the LAPD, Harry Bosch must face the darkest parts of his past to track down his mother's killer...even if it costs him his life.
Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemned. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his commanding officer, he's even had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinitely pending a psychiatric evaluation, he's spending his time investigating an unsolved crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother.
Even after three decades, Harry's questions generate heat among L.A.'s top politicos. And as the truth begins to emerge, it becomes more and more apparent that someone wants to keep it buried. Someone very powerful...very cunning...and very deadly.
Edgar Award-winning author Michael Connelly has created a dark, fast-paced suspense thriller that cuts to the core of Harry Bosch's character. Once you start it, there's no turning back.
Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.©1995 by Hieronymous, Inc. (P)1995 Brilliance Audio, all rights reserved.Critic reviews
"Grabs you and shakes you-and it feels great." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Connelly is at the top of his form in this brilliant mystery. Dick Hill does an outstanding job capturing Bosch's cynicism and anger, confusion and hurt. Hill changes his voice well to portray the other characters, most notably the female police psychiatrist...this is a first-rate production." (AudioFile)
"A powerful book." (Houston Chronicle)

Don't know why audible allows such audio quality.
narrator is good.
compared to the television series Edgar gets only a tiny role.

Bosch’s back story
I’ve started the Harry Bush series from the very beginning again, and although this is a very important chapter in Harrys life, this book has been the hardest read of the series so far.
Quite dull and drawn out in places. And I’d forgot what a awful person Garry is at times. Hard to like even.
Still, a great series. On to the next.

Competent if a bit formulaic
Competently written by an experienced author but overall it felt a bit drawn out and a bit formulaic. There was the usual “cop gone rogue” element and a cast of characters that you have to concentrate to remember later as there are inevitably red herrings and interwoven strands.
Not bad but I won’t be rushing to read more.
A note on the production - on a few places there were some off putting background noises. At one point it sounded like footsteps on a fire escape type staircase. Several times I could hear a muffled, low volume male voice talking. A bit odd.
Anyway, if you like these kind of standard cop whodunnits you will probably like this. I don’t particularly. Not the kind of story you will remember after reading it.

An excellent American murder mystery story
This is another excellent Harry Bosch tale from Michael Connolly. Harry Bosch is a murder detective in the LA police Department who is a strong minded rebel who sees things in black and white. He is a flawed macho figure whose difficult and deprived early upbringing has coloured his view of his life, and his work . The story is an American murder mystery and it is an excellent example of the genre. It is set in 1990's Los Angeles. The characters are believable and well-drawn. The narrative flows steadily and pulls you along. The plot is satisfyingly complex with twists and turns, but it is coherent and understandable. This is another very entertaining book from an author who has been at the top of his game for many years.
The narrator of the story, Dick Hill, gives a master class in voice acting. He manages to put consistent and appropriate voices into the mouths of both male and female characters, which really helps the listener to follow the story. I strongly recommend this book to those who enjoy being entertained by American murder mysteries.

The Last Coyote
It took time to listen to but it was worth it. Michael Connelly and his Harry Bosch series are an amazing read. Each book in the series is better than the one before.
Highly recommended.

Seamless
Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Coyote: Harry Bosch Series, Book 4 to be better than the print version?
This is a seamless book that develops the back story that lies behind all Harry Bosch novels. Dick Hill deals well with the twists and turns of the plot line keeping the listener fully engaged through his own own unique interpretation, inflection and delivery of the text. Is it better than reading the book oneself? Probably not, but familiarity with the narrator does help to keep the listener fully engaged.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The character of Harry is well developed and is revealed here as a being deeply flawed and complex. Harry is better sketched and articulated in 'The Last Coyote' than in any other Harry Bosch story that I have so far encountered. For me this is therefor the best HB story line because Harry's own history forms the core of the book and is the central focus of the story line. Sympathy engendered by Harry's tragic personal history develops the readers interest in and identification with the character of Harry Bosch, something that I have felt was sadly missing in other HB stories, that is until now! For me, Harry comes fully alive in this book. I would advise a new reader of the series to start their immersion into the world of Harry Bosch by first reading or listening to 'The Last Coyote', as the story line, particularly the sessions with the lady psychologist slowly unpeels and reveals, his motivations, drives and character traits.
Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I prefer Dick Hill to any of the other Bosch narrators probably because you feel most comfortable with the narrator that first introduces you to a series, as a bench mark is established, provided, of course that the narrator is competent and sensitive to the text. In the same way Jeff Harding is my favourite Jack Reacher narrator
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The story is seamless and so there are very few natural breaks or put down points - it keeps you fully engaged.
Any additional comments?
My favourite Bosch story so far - I have 7 in my library
