About this listen

The final audiobook in the quartet of The Ballantyne Novels by Wilbur Smith, The Leopard Hunts in Darkness is a taut tale of the internal struggles of a fledgling nation.

Craig Mellow, acclaimed author but unhappy exile, seizes the chance to return to Zimbabwe when he is given a spying mission for the World Bank. Accompanied by beautiful photographer Sally-Anne Jay, he is at first unaware of the dangerous currents of tribal conflict that swirl below the calm surface of Zimbabwean politics. Then he stumbles upon a highly organised ivory-poaching operation which masks the treacherous plot to sell the country he once fought for into slavery....

Marvellous

Exciting and so very well written. The arrival of the cattle made me laugh until I cried. Zimbabwe - beautiful country - my heart bleeds. The narrator did a good job but struggled with accents and pronunciations.

Excellent, original, captivating

I’ve listened to about 10 audiobooks from Wilbur Smith. Some of them feel repetitive in the sense that they have similar conflicts between family members, similar stories about lust and adultery.
This one, by contrast, is highly original, thrilling, and unpredictable.
The narrator also does a great job.

Being Zimbo I can tell you this book is excellent

Great book so many truths about how Africa is, still very much tribal. Although fiction it gives insight how it really is. Easy to relate to

Happy ending

At least a happy ending for one Ballantyne. A great read despite the fouling up of local names and places. Still worth it. Just bleak that Wilbur didn’t do one with the 1904-1975 of the series! Would have been a tasty Bildungsroman of the Ballantyne family.

Missing text

Great story but there are sections from the story which have been omitted and for an unabridged book is not acceptable. For example the switch from Ch14 to Ch15 misses out a significant part of the plot where Craig meets up with the Rebels prior to his raid on the prison compound in Zimbabwe.
