About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

1850: Beatrix Fawcett is just 18 when her father tells her she is to marry a stranger. Hesitant, but with little choice, she agrees to the match - with hope for a good husband in Charles and the surprising delight of a lovely Yorkshire house in which they are to live.

As Beatrix sets to making the house a home, she falls in love with it and the countryside nearby. But she does not fall in love with her husband.... It's clear Charles has chosen her simply to meet the requirements of his inheritance and has little interest in his young wife.

Soon, the only spark in Beatrix's lonely life is her beloved children. But when Charles threatens to take them away from her, Beatrix must find strength in desperate times. Can she fight against her circumstances and keep what is rightfully hers?

A powerful story about a woman's struggle in a loveless marriage, from the Sunday Times best-selling author Val Wood.

Compulsive listening.

I completely agree with a previous review and the reviewers disappointment when the audio book came to an end and that there would be a sequel to it in the future. Such beautiful writing and story telling.

Simply Fabulous

Val Wood is one of my very favourite authors and the pairing of her and Anne Dover is perfect. This story was full of twists and turns, full of history and quite emotional. I truly didn't want it to end and would love to read a sequel.

A Brilliant Story

From the beginning to the end of this story I couldn’t stop listening. Val Wood, please write another book letting your readers know what happened in the lives of all the characters - I can’t wait! Anne Dover, I will say again, what a brilliant narrator you are. You made the story so enjoyable - thank you. !

Good story of a strong woman.

After a slow start it develops into an intereseting story which then suddenly stops. I wish it would have continued. Enjoyed it very much. Perhaps a continuation of this good story in another book would be good. I would like to read what happens after the end of the book.
