Competent and enjoyable. But somewhat predictable. Scott Brick showed a bit more animation than in previous books where he sounded as if he was on Mogadon. He still had that dreary presentation for the lesser characters but his John Corey part was ok.

I first came across Nelson Demille when I read Plum Island and since then Ive read and lovedevery one of his novels, especially the John Corey series. This one was not to the usual standard. It was in some ways saved by the excellent as ever Scott Brick narration. I think he and Jeff Harding stand at the pinnacle of audio book narrators.

As others have said, the story is very slow. Half way in and realistically all that has happened is that Corey has had an interview for a job. Yes, theres some subtext to it, and the base is being set for stuff that will come nearer the end, but after a while I was just wanting some story to develope.

Excellent humour in the John Corey dialogue, but it was possibly a bit over relied upon to plug an otherwise stretched out story.

Give us another one soon, just to show this was a mere blip.

Another terrific listen that had me hooked & continually smiling at JCs dry wit & humour. Excellently read by Scott Brick once again.

Love love Nelson Demille normally .. but I felt this John Corey was too much about making one liners and not enough story. Yes some one liners were funny but there were too many and it detracted from any story and was a little predictable unfortunately. The main character trying to be constant smart arse and made the story less realistic and unbelievable ..

Having read all the previous John Corey books , I was excited to find this one but very disappointed in the story which I felt was quite unbelievable in lots of places. Really seems to be set in another era. Not for me.

The story was boring and predictable for the first 3/4 then it felt like he was rushing to finish. Didn’t feel like his usual work. I’ve enjoyed all the John Corey books so far but maybe it’s time for a new character that can start a fresh.

I have been looking forward to this book for a long time. I have read all of the JC novels and previously found them really enjoyable and amongst my favourites but this story was long, tedious and large parts were utterly ridiculous - particularly the relationship between characters.

As for the performance, I found this awful. It was very hard to pick up on the distinction between character voices and particularly the parts where John Corey is thinking singing, rather than saying it. It made keeping up with dialogue between characters really difficult
