I quite enjoyed this book. I wasn’t keen on the end though. I thought it was clutching at straws in a number of ways and let the story down, however I realise that’s quite a personal thing. I found myself muttering “oh for goodness sake, seriously??” and rolling my eyes when the reveals came which was a shame because the tension was built nicely. Generally the story had a good feel to it and kept me listening even though I didn’t like the narration. I’m not sure I’d read another book by this author. I might try one if it had half decent narration and see. I’m not sure though. The female narrator has a voice that’s far too mature for the age of the main character, or any of the characters for that matter. It always makes me cringe when casting is done like this. Her voice didn’t fit the central character at all and she made her sound really annoying and twee. Also she read a young male character who’s born and bred in the U.K. with an American accent which was a bizarre thing to do. The male narrator was truly dire though. He wasn’t creepy he was just bad. I can’t decide what he thought he was doing. It was amateur pantomime villain time. I wanted to jack the book in every time he spoke. I realised pretty early on that fortunately he didn’t have a lot of air time, otherwise I’d definitely have sent the book back. Audible really need to do some work on their casting. There are just too many poor narrators and given the talent in this country there’s simply no excuse.

It was a lovely listen and had some scary moments and who dunnit twists but ultimately it was a bit of a let down the knitting together the who's and why's at the end. It lacked a bit of imagination but it holds you throughout. Ideal if you like to read as little gore as possible and not too dark to be disturbing.

My first book by Caroline Mitchell and I will continue reading the books in the series. Brilliantly narrated too.

This was a creepy dark tale which centres around Blackhall Manor in Slayton. This is a place which carries a very dark past. Murders that ripped apart the lives of an entire family.

The whole town knows about the tragedy and the history of the house. That being said the Midnight Game as they call it continues… five girls break into the house thinking how fun it would be to play the game …..

The girls arrive as a quintet and leave as a quartet.

In the background we have DC Sarah Noble. She left the area for a while and as she returns soon discovers that you can leave Slayton but, the past has a habit of rearing its ugly head.

Blackhall manor is a place of trepidation for Sarah and it is a place she never wants to return to.
She has a case which involves the manor and she is carrying a dark past that only one or two people know about.

Now, she has to face her worst fear as a young child is dreaming about things that are happening in Slayton. There are glimmers of the film ‘The Sixth Sense’ …..

There is a constant sense of foreboding throughout most of the book, I suggest that you add the audio for this really adds to the book.

I have been looking forward to listening to this book since it’s recent release. I was not disappointed. The plot is suitably dark as you would expect from the book description and is always going at a good pace.
I will not spoil the story but I did not work out the “Midnight Man” although all the clues were there.
What also makes this book stand out is the narration. A lot of effort went into producing it and it is so worth while. Well done.
I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

This was a departure from my usual fare and I’m really glad that I chose it. Well paced, gradual telling of the vitally important back story, interesting characters and plenty of twists. Will be choosing this author again.

I bought this book because I really enjoyed Emma Gregory's work on the Mangle Street series ( by M.R.Kasasian. She performs all the characters in this book brilliantly too. The premise of The Midnight Man is creepy, with some interesting characters. The ending was a bit of a let down for me, but I will still buy the next in the Slayton series, as it was an entertaining book overall.

I do not usually choose thrillers but this is amazing! I enjoyed every minute of it, probably because it is horror too.
children decide to go on a dare to an old house where a family was murdered. they go to play a game called the Midnight Man three go in and only two come out. someone is very dangerous,
this book is a must have.
