Summary

Meet Agatha Christie, the best-selling novelist in human history. Her writing career spanned six decades, during which time she wrote 66 crime novels, 6 non-crime novels (including romances), and over 150 short stories. Not only was she a phenomenally successful novelist, but she is also the most successful female playwright of all time - her play “The Mousetrap” is the longest-running show in history.

As you learn about Christie’s experiences and her storied career, you will better understand how the circumstances of her life shaped her work and vice versa. Along the way, consider some fascinating questions:

  • How did becoming a nurse and an apothecary’s assistant influence her crime stories?
  • Would her literary career have been different if she had not been a part of well-to-do British society?
  • Why did Christie disappear at the height of her fame - and will we ever know the whole truth about that fateful event?

Agatha Christie’s works have been read by millions and have been adapted into film, television, plays, and more since her debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, introduced the world to Hercule Poirot in 1920. Her famous detectives, Poirot and Miss Marple, have become beloved staples of pop culture around the world. With such a legacy, it can sometimes be surprising how much of her life remains a mystery to her readers. In The Mysterious Case of Agatha Christie, you will get an intimate glimpse of her private life, investigate the secrets of her greatest novels, and perhaps solve a few mysteries yourself.

Very interesting

Really enjoyed the lectures, learned a lot I didn’t know about Agatha Christie, her life and relationships, and the relationship she had with her characters. Well narrated too.

Mystery Girl

I really needed this wonderful course on Agatha Christie! It’s so informative and full of insight into Agatha Christie’s life, books, films and her literary style and what motivates her plotlines. Clearly Maureen Corrigan is a self confessed Agatha Christie fan, however her diagnosis is concise and fair as any of Miss Marple or Hercule Poitrot’s diagnoses of their cases. Thank you!

a refreshing story

I loved it, loads of details well presented of an author who has always been for many just behind the scenes.
listen to it or buy a copy, Christie had a very interesting life and the behind the story of her books there is a lot to understand!

A very accessible series of short lectures on Christie

An interesting overview of Agatha Christie’s life and work, offering insights into the author’s life and the nature of her books. Best if you’ve read a few of her mysteries already, particularly The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. There’s a warning of spoiler for The Man in the Brown Suit, but no warning for one given for The Pale Horse.

Excellent, if slightly repetitive, exploration of Christie

Although I had consumed many adaptations of her works and read some of her books, Agatha Christie remained a mystery to me. That was until I listened to these extremely well put together lectures on the Queen of Crime. The only critical note I would have is that some of content is repeated across lectures and that the breadth of third party sources referred to are a little limited. That said, anyone even vaguely interested in Christie will learn a huge amount from these well written and engagingly presented pieces.

Informative Agatha Lectures

I enjoyed each of these series of lectures... I would suggest that unless someone is very expert they are bound to learn some new things about this favourite author

Fascinating

Great insight to the life of Agatha Christie; there are some slight spoilers of a few books; better to listen to if you've read many of AC's works already.
