About this listen

‘An authentic and exciting story. The perfect summer read’ - Clare Mackintosh, author of the bestselling I LET YOU GO

From the author of the bestselling Some Day I’ll Find You comes a novel of dark suspense set in the Lake District where, beneath the inviting water of the lakes, danger and death are waiting.

The summer of 1976 was unprecedented in living memory. Days of blazing sunshine bled into weeks and months. In the Lake District, Cumbria’s mountains and valleys began to resemble a Grecian landscape. People swam in delightfully tropic waters to cool off. But, barely three feet below the surface, the temperature remained just a degree or so above freezing. As the summer blazed on, the drownings began…

What if someone wanted to take revenge? To remove an abusive, controlling partner from their life? When and where better to stage a murder and pass it off as an accidental drowning?©2016 Richard Madeley (P)2016 Simon & Schuster

I wasn't sure what to expect from Richard Madeley but he didn't disappoint! This book was a fantastic story which was believable, romantic and full of suspense. I found it a little corny in places but it just added to it's charm. It left me thinking about it for ages and I told all my friends to read it. Looking forward to reading more of Richard's work.

Intriguing and marvellous.

surprisingly good.

Christ!

A dizzyingly diverse cast of characters with alarming alliteration. From Meriel to Muriel to Merrymen. Madeley makes the most from these mercurial men and masterfully written maidens.

This page turner has comprehensively evaporated much of the cynicism I was feeling up until I read this book. It is no small feat to say that this book has restored me. Thank you Richard

A fast paced book and a great idea. Slightly cheesy ending. Maybe different narrator for female lead as couldn't get Richard Madeley out of my head.

A great plot

I really enjoyed this book. Certainly makes you think just how many women are in the same position as the lead female character!

Great listen

Well Richard, you did it again. A truly wonderful book. You don’t just tell the story — you inhabit it with your fabulous story telling voice. Your ability to convey the characters with such vividness and emotion brings the narrative to life in a way that feels almost cinematic. Honestly, your writing is so expressive and natural, it’s easy to imagine you playing these characters yourself. You could very well be an actor! — that’s how powerfully you capture each scene. I just love your books….and you, of course, reading them! Never stop!

Thrilling, emotional and capturing

Strap in for an exhilarating Cumbrian adventure, set against the backdrop of one hell of a hot summer. Seb Richmond is an omni-competent journalist, who struggles with any task only when it allows the audience to relate to him. But when a woman with almost no internal life falls into his lap, Seb will have to make cool headed decisions... at a somewhat faster pace than usual. Christ - it's comprehensively good.
