About this listen

They once faced each other on a battlefield. Now soldier-turned-spy Jonathan Reese must keep watch over the man he's never forgotten. A close encounter reveals Karl von Binder, the count's son, also recalls the day he spared Jonathan's life. Sparks fly between the former enemies and Jonathan begins to lose perspective on his mission. He knows he must maintain distance because the heat he encounters in Karl's touch stirs him far too deeply for his own good. He can't keep away - especially when he suspects someone is trying to kill the nobleman. The spy becomes a protector as Jonathan guards the man he's begun to care for. Together the men try to puzzle out who would benefit from Karl's death - and how much they're willing to trust each other when a torrid sexual fling threatens to become an affair of the heart.

When I listened to this the first time I recall being really in love with the story. However, after going through a few of other works in this genre my mind has changed somewhat. I guess all is clear in comparison. Overall it is one of my favourite time periods (Edwardian England) and my favourite dynamic (enemies kinda to lovers). However the execution is a little disappointing. Reese is supposed to be this fantastic spy but honestly he is kind of shit at his job: exposes himself to his target immediately, clearly misses very obvious signs of subterfuge or lies, keeps being distracted by counts advances and basically screams suspicious. It is obvious the writer has no idea how spies operate and this really pulls us out of the immersion. Now to the count, while he is extremely lascivious and reckless, at least his behavious is explained quite well and honestly I find him to be an amazing character. In comparison with Reese it just hurts my literary heart to have one character so well developed while the other is just all over the place. It would have been better if Reese was a canonically horrible spy and this was a comedy. There is a lot (and I mean A LOT) of smut in this. Honestly too much. The moment some sort of interesting plot point comes up or situation develops, they immediately are all over each other. I have read many M/M novels and this is an anomaly with 60% smut and 40% plot. Maybe some people like that but I disagree. Narrator did his best but his intonations were a bit off and he struggled a little with pacing. Otherwise a solid 4 stars.

Interesting concept
