About this listen

The Perfect Couple… A match made in HEAVEN or HELL?

‘Chillingly believable and utterly compelling’ Lucy Foley, No.1 bestselling author of The Hunting Party
‘The perfect summer read. A classy thriller. Stylish, twisty and full of suspense’ Sarah Pinborough, No.1 bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

When Emily applies for a job as a housekeeper for widower Rupert, it’s a chance to start over – a steady job and regular money means she can work towards her own place, not sharing a grimy flat with old mate, Mags.

As Emily gets to know more about Rupert’s world – how he likes his supper when he comes in from work, who his friends are – she can make sure everything runs like clockwork for him.

Soon there’s a spark between them; Rupert likes Emily and invites her to stay. For good.

To the outside world, they really seem to be a perfect match. There’s just the small issue of what really happened to Rupert’s first wife…

A gripping, razor-sharp game of cat and mouse, from the bestselling author, Lisa Hall.

Praise for The Perfect Couple:

‘Chillingly believable and utterly compelling with thrills aplenty — I loved this book’ Lucy Foley, No.1 bestselling author of The Hunting Party

‘The perfect summer read. A classy thriller that’s stylish, twisty and full of suspense, Hall’s novel is garnished with echoes of the classics such as Rebecca and Gaslight, but is very much a delicious cocktail all of its own’ Sarah Pinborough, No.1 bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

‘Razor-sharp’ The Sun

‘Chock-full of menace, red herrings, and well-drawn characters who pull you one way, then hurl you in the opposite direction. I had my theories – they were all wrong! Highly recommend’ Caz Frear, No.1 bestselling author of Sweet Little Lies

‘Think Rebecca, Body Heat, and Gaslight. Lisa Hall’s dark thriller plays on three classic tropes and does the seemingly unimaginable: it improves on them. You’re going to devour this one’ Christina Dalcher, bestselling author of Vox and Q

‘A sharp game of cat and mouse with a brilliant, twisty plot. Unputdownable!’ Candis

‘Darkly addictive and impossible to predict, this is Lisa Hall at her absolute best’ CWA Dagger-winning author Chris Whitaker

Good listen but bay edited

I really enjoyed this book and it kept me gripped from the outset. However, i hope it is re-edited for future listeners as there were several occasions throughout the book where sentences were repeated which was a little annoying.

terrible editing!!!!

the story is good and it's well narrated but the producer has taken no care over the finished product and there are phrases repeated due to sloppy editing. needs fine tuning

I felt I wasted my time reading it

the way it was written was absolutely ridiculous. not because the suspense had built up but because it was written like the characters were like this and just because at the end, the author changed the character completely, we are supposed to believe it? Really annoyed to have wasted so many hours on this.

definitely not worth nearly 5* in the reviews!

A kind of My Fair Lady theme when a young housekeeper eases her way into a pompous man's life. She mixes with his pompous and senseless friends and family. Weird that she has only one of her own. Be prepared to paddle in very shallow waters the characters are all so superficial and false. The talented narrator only accentuates the inane characters. Not too sure why its called The Perfect Couple. Too often repeated themes are "I'm sorry I should have told you the truth" and "will you forgive me". The previous wife's name is used as often as a preposition, I got really sick of hearing her name and if I ever hear the word 'orangery' again I think I'll scream. The ending is not unexpected. Not gripping, not a razor sharp game of cat and mouse. I listened to the end to give a true review. There are also many phrases repeated throughout the book, is this down to bad editing? I don't know, but overall disappointed.

Not one likeable character & predictable

Perhaps if I’d read this book rather than listened to the audio recording I’d have liked it better, as I’m afraid the narrator’s sickly sweet voice and making all words ending ‘ing’ into ‘in’ (talkin’, walkin’, wishin’) irritated me & put me off the main character!
I have also read a number of other thrillers with amazing twists & turns that you’d never see coming, but the characters in this book were all so unlikeable and awful that I was able to easily guess who the folk were who were the ‘baddies’.
Disappointed!
