Summary

A priceless violin. And a dark secret someone is prepared to kill for.

DCI Oldroyd has seen his fair share of victims, but he has never witnessed a murder - until now. When world-famous violinist Hans Muller is shot and killed during a concert, the detective is faced with a case beyond logic. The culprit is nowhere to be found - and the victim’s priceless violin has disappeared too.

As Oldroyd investigates the mystery of the murderer’s identity and the motive for the killing, he enters the ruthless world of wealthy instrument collectors and stumbles upon a dark path where shocking secrets have been buried in the past. But the secrets will soon take centre stage.

Oldroyd must use all his cunning to recover the priceless instrument. But can he also solve the mystery of a murderer who vanished in front of his own eyes?

Gripping yarn!

Excellent tale with nice historical touches about Stradivarius violins and about the music and makeup of String Quartets. Narration rather heavy and monotonous but Yorkshire dialects good.

Enjoyed the story

The story was full of twists and turns and sometimes difficult to follow due to the narration. Even so I will continue to listen to this series

A definite improvement.

A big improvement on number 1! The narrator is still somewhat difficult to listen to as he had an querulous quality to his voice for so many characters. The variety of voice is good but who do most people seem to be around 90 years old in their voices? Nevertheless, the story is interesting & the accuracy of detail is excellent.

Not bad- but not great either.

This is the second in the series and it was ok but not outstanding.
The story starts with a shooting at a concert of the lead violinist in a string quartet. His violin is a Stradivarius, which is stolen. Of course this leads to a wider network of looted Nazi Treasure, of lost instruments, obsessive collectors and a whole load of red herrings. The stakes increase with a second murder and another police force gets involved.
The story despite being fairly full on has a strange pace, and at times drags and at other times rushes things too much.
The narrator is quite flat and lets the story down a bit but is not the worst I've ever heard.

Old fashioned detective story with a cheating solution

OK. Solid old detective story. Sadly, the solution is a cheat. Breaches a basic tenet of detective story writing. A secret twin? Really? I think this is enough to put me off listening to anything else by this author.
