About this listen

Over 13 months in 1976-1977, four children were abducted in the Detroit suburbs, each of them held for days before their still-warm bodies were dumped in the snow near public roadsides. The Oakland County Child Murders spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in US history. Yet after less than two years, the task force created to find the killer was shut down without naming a suspect.

The case “went cold” for more than 30 years, until a chance discovery by one victim’s family pointed to the son of a wealthy General Motors executive: Christopher Brian Busch, a convicted pedophile, was freed weeks before the fourth child disappeared.

Veteran Detroit News reporter Marney Rich Keenan takes the listener inside the investigation of the still-unsolved murders - seen through the eyes of the lead detective in the case and the family who cracked it open - revealing evidence of a decades-long cover-up of malfeasance and obstruction that denied justice for the victims.

Chilling!

I read a lot of true crime, but this one left chis throughout my body. The coverups from the very thought left me incensed. This shoulx be looked at again, to find out who needs booking, even if its ppostumously.

Truly sad case study

Brilliantly written & narrated. Very detailed explanation about killing of children in 70's Detroit. A very long & sometimes upsetting book, I several times wanted to stop listening, but I was drawn in & had to finish it.

Very disturbing

An extremely thorough account of the case. I listen to a lot of true crime and I’m not easily offended. But I did struggle with the somewhat overly detailed accounts of child sex abuse. I don’t feel the story needed it. Could be watered down in my opinion.
The narrator was ok, a bit dull in parts. Much better in others.
Shocking and extremely sad.

Superb.

To start, narration was absolutely perfect. Well paced and pronounced throughout. I haven't read a case study like this in a long time. The authors knowledge of the case is underpinned by the breadth of the timeline - nearly 40 years of investigative rigour by various parties succinctly explained in just under 12 hours. A terrifyingly tragic and engrossing story; I feel the many twists and turns means I'll be listening to this book from start to finish again very soon.
